About the Author
John K. Halvey is a partner in the New York office of the international law firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley, & McCloy, LLP and the founder of the Strategic Sourcing and Technology Group. He practices in all areas of technology and sourcing law, with particular emphasis on information technology and business process outsourcing and private equity transactions involving technology or sourcing companies.
Mr. Halvey has represented companies in many of the largest technology, telecommunications, and business processing outsourcing transactions, including Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan, BellSouth, Panasonic, Citigroup, DuPont, AT&T, Alcatel, Xerox, Boeing, Bombardier, General Atlantic and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.
His work in these areas has been the subject of articles in Forbes, Information Week, Computer World, CIO Magazine, The Daily Deal, and Venture Capital Journal. Mr. Halvey has for many years been ranked by Chambers and Partners as one of the world’s leading information technology and outsourcing lawyers and was the only lawyer in the United States to be ranked a "Star Performer" in the outsourcing industry in both 2005 and 2006. In 2006 Mr. Halvey received the Chambers Shield of Excellence as the Outsourcing Attorney of the Year and as the HR Outsourcing Attorney of the Year by the HROA.

Barbara M. Melby is a partner in the Global Outsourcing Group at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, LLP. Ms. Melby’s practice focuses primarily on outsourcing transactions, including information technology and business process outsourcing, as well as other technology-related transactions, including development agreements, system implementation agreements, licensing and hosting agreements, technology services, joint ventures, and strategic alliances.
One of the leading outsourcing attorneys in the United States, Ms. Melby is the coauthor of Information Technology Outsourcing: Process, Strategies, and Contracts (John Wiley & Sons, 2005). I have an older version of this book (2000) and have referred to it frequently when considering outsourcing, in thinking through partnering potentials, and in considering consultant hires. Halvey & Melby systematically walk you through the things you need to consider including: planning, defining the scope, vendor selection, negotiations, contracting, measuring performance, human resources, projects, international considerations, post and re-negotiation activities, and termination.

BPO 2nd edition review

The book is quite interesting in matter of setting an initial framework for BPO contracts, provisions and so forth. However I do think that it lacks a little in depth in matters of theoretical BPO foundation and/or importance. Every piece of information within the book is not quite up to date, which means it has content from 2005 and backwards, no recent developments ins regard to the topic exist.

About the Author

Wong Kiew Kit, popularly known as Sifu Wong, is the fourth generation successor of Venerable Jiang Nan from the famous Shaolin Monastery in China and Grandmaster of Shaolin Wahnam Institute of Kungfu and Chi Kung. He received the “Chi Kung Master of the Year” Award during the Second World Congress on Chi Kung held in San Francisco in 1997. He has practiced and taught the Shaolin arts for more than 3 decades and has more than 60,000 students all over the world.

So, you're interested in getting a better understanding on Shaolin Kungfu. This book really opened my mind from what I had previously believed to be Shaolin. I am a Zen Buddhist, who has long been interested in understanding more about the various martial arts. I thought this book might give me decent insight into the practices of Shaolin Kungfu, and help expand on the core principles of why it has sustained into our present world. This book very much illustrates that. The step by step instructions are deeply informative and have helped open my eyes to the connection between my mind and body. I've been practicing as I go, and I've eased into trying to improve on the form and force of the moves illustrated.

I originally just wanted an opportunity to open my mind to the practices of Shaolin monks and masters. This book I feel has me very excited to learn more. I just recently purchased the authors book on Tai Chi Chuan in an attempt to further understand these great practices.

If you're on the fence because of the price, if you're truly passionate about self-betterment and understanding more about the history, practices, and grandeur of the Shaolin Arts. I suggest you purchase this book.

Rich world-building and a fascinating female protagonist

Katherine Kerr has drawn a spectacularly rich world with history, mythology, varied races and languages far outstripping most other fantasy writers. She has also produced a fascinating heroine in the character of Jill. While this rather plain anglo-saxon name continues to bug me as I read the series, Jill is a great example of a woman in a man's world--a woman attempting to overcome the conventions demanding that she put on a skirt and have babies. Another good character is the wizard Nevyn, doomed to live until he repairs the damage he has caused multiple souls. While he's a bit too all-powerful at times, Nevyn's striving to put things right pushes the series forward. I heartily recommend the books to anyone tired of Valdemar's italics or Midkemia's flatness.

The first in a long line

Daggerspell is the first of a series of -thus far- 13 books. If you start, start with the first one. In some series it doesn't really matter which one you start with, but here it does. It's a complicated story, not really one story, but a bunch of stories bundles in to one, starring the same main "characters" in different lives. Their fates or karma are woven together throughout their different lives and they keep getting reborn until they can live in peace with eachother.

I love they way Katharine Kerr use the different timelines. In each different time you get a new set of characters who are different, but also the same - except for Neven, the sorcerer, who lives through all these different times and centuries. It's because of a mistake he made when he was youg that he binds his soul with those of the peoples that died because of him. He vows not to rest until the dammage he did will be undone - little did he know it would take him severel centuries !!!

If you don't like to read a lot, or don't like long, complicated stories, don't start with this one, because there are 12 more that follow !

Then and there he vowed never to rest until he'd righted that wrong--and laid the foundation for the lives of Jill and all those whom she would hold dear: her father, the mercenary soldier Cullyn; the exiled berserker Rhodry Maelwaedd; and the ancient and powerful herbman Nevyn, all bound in a struggle against darkness...and a quest to fulfill the destinies determined centuries ago.

Katherine Kerr's writing takes a bit of getting used to, but it's worth the effort. She approaches her stories with a Celtic storytelling mindset, which means she conveys events according to their significance to the story, as opposed to chronologically. Consequently, while the stories begin in the "present" (which is an elastic concept, anyway, in a fantasy setting), the events unfold, chapter wise, both in the "present" and in the distant past. This can be frustrating, at first, but Kerr's writing is heavily steeped in Pagan and Western Mystery tradition, and the Celtic setting (and mindset) of her characters means that time, or chronological time, is not essentially relevant. To be honest, I found the first half of this book infuriating, as I spent a lot of time trying to adjust to the writing style. However, I found the story engrossing enough that I persevered, and by the second half was so hooked I've read all ten in her three series.

Kerr's story evolves around the concept of reincarnation, and unfinished business, and "karma", and fate. The same souls recur again and again, just in new bodies, over the course of the centuries over which the story unfolds.

Kerr's world is one of High Fantasy, populated by Elves, Men, and Dwarves, as well as faeries/elementals, which she terms the "Wildfolk". However, hers is a slightly more dark, dangerous and less clear cut world than the works of other High Fantasy authors, not the least due to the fact that someone who was your friend in a former life can re-emerge in the story centuries later as a foe, and vice versa. There is a tremendous amount of magic, but it's the magic of the Western Mystery tradition (quite a bit of Golden Dawn and even Enochiana), and that of R.J. Stewarts Faery tradition. There are dragons, and giant beast men.

The Elves are a fallen race, driven out of their magnificent and palatial cities centuries before by invaders, and who now roam the plains as primitives. They possess the potential to be superlative magicians, but the knowledge was lost in the fall of their civilization. Humans, though warlike and shorter lived, have preserved this knowledge, but guard it jealously. The Wildfolk, basically magic incarnate, are unhinged from the effects of "karma", but lack permanence of personality, and cannot grow or develop, cursed to stagnation. The Dwarves are a secretive mystery, entrenched within the earth. Each has something to offer the other, and the story that unfolds is the story of this "technology" exchange, of sorts, between them.

Fans of Marion Zimmer Bradley, who clearly influenced Kerr, will be enraptured by this series, as will fans of Kate Eliott, who Kerr, herself, clearly influenced. It's phenomenal! Devotees of the New Age, Esoteric or Occult will find themselves nodding and smiling as they read, and sincerely hoping Kerr's writing will do for the Western Mystery and Faery traditions what Bradley's has done for Wicca.

Yiyun Li is the author of four works of fiction: Kinder Than Solitude, A Thousand Years of Good Prayers, The Vagrants, and Gold Boy, Emerald Girl. A native of Beijing and a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, she is the recipient of many awards, including a PEN/Hemingway Award and a MacArthur Foundation fellowship, and was named by The New Yorker as one of the “20 Under 40” fiction writers to watch. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, A Public Space, The Best American Short Stories, and The O. Henry Prize Stories, among other publications. She teaches writing at the University of California, Davis, and lives in Oakland, California, with her husband and their two sons.

A beautifully crafted, masterful memoir.

Yiyun Li is a Chinese-American writer who moved from China to the US when she was 24 years old. Although her mother tongue is Chinese, from the very beginning she started to write in English. She has won many awards for her writing. This is her memoir.

For a decade, Li tried to be a perfect mother, writer and full-time worker. During those 10 years, she used to write between midnight and four in the morning --- and then one day she just could not do it anymore. She became depressed and even tried to commit suicide. As a result, she was hospitalized twice. She wrote DEAR FRIEND, FROM MY LIFE I WRITE TO YOU IN YOUR LIFE for two years, and her intention, at first, was to argue for and against suicide at the same time. But once one starts reading this magnificent memoir, it soon becomes obvious that this is about much more than that. The reader will not find out the details of Li’s depression or suicide attempt, and she does not even write too much about her hospital stays. There is no recollection of her dark times, because this is a memoir about healing.

DEAR FRIEND does not have a linear plot line. Instead of providing insight into her childhood and youth in China, move to the US, depression, hospital visits and healing, Li takes the reader on an intimate journey. Yes, bits and pieces about her life in China and her hospitalization are scattered throughout the book, but what dominates are her thoughts about writing and references to the literature that she read during her healing process. In a way, this is a homage to Li’s favorite authors in whose works she found solace in her dark times. Thus she refers to such writers as Turgenev, Kierkegaard, Hardy, Gorky, Green, Chekov and Mansfield, and a whole chapter is devoted to William Trevor and their friendship.

This is neither an easy nor a fast read. It is pregnant with difficult thoughts and reflections on life, death, writing, the relationship between a writer and his/her characters, and the writer and his/her readers. Li also poses a question about identity and language, because she writes solely in English, her second language.

With her recollections of the books she read in her teens, Li transported me back to my own adolescent years, a time when electronic devices didn’t dominate our lives and we could surrender to reading. The book rouses a desire to read not only all the authors she mentions here, but also her own works.

DEAR FRIEND is a beautifully crafted memoir in which Li masterfully combines childhood memories with the life and work of great authors and her own intimate thoughts on life, death and writing. Although it is divided into nine chapters, each dealing with a different issue, the book should be read as a whole. Only that way will one get the complete picture.

Sad subjects at times but lovely, flowing writing

Li is an award winning fiction writer, but this is her first non-fiction work. It’s a memoir, written over two years that saw Li hospitalized for suicide attempts. While it jumps around in time a lot, it’s still obviously been smoothed out a lot because things flow well.

The author writes about her childhood in China during a time when free thought was not encouraged, with a mother who had significant mental issues of her own as a narcissist. She speaks of her decision to change from being a scientist with an assured income and green card, to being a writer. She tells us some about her stay in a mental hospital and about her feelings that took her there. Mostly, she writes about reading and writing, and the books and authors that have been important to her.

It’s a sad tale, mostly. But it engaged me and the prose is so well done that it sucked me in for hours.

Intriguing premise, repetitive delivery. Did not finish.

This book sounded intriguing; a memoir of a fiction writer, from China, musing about her life after several suicide attempts. Her writing forms her recovery.

One thing I found odd, from the start, the title of this book “Dear Friend, from my Life, I write to you in Your Life” is a phrase taken from another writer. While it might capture what she felt this book does, it was odd to use another author’s (Katherine Mansfield) phrase as her title, however later reading in the book it starts to make sense.

This book wanders from the start all over the place. At times it was hard to follow, other times it was spot on in capturing the separation between people and what forms another’s reality and what is authentic. At times it is clear, the author is struggling with a sense of who she is and gets fixated on a concept or two (melodrama). Her mother clearly had some mental illness and I’m sure impacted the author’s sense of the world when she was young.

At one point, the author writes about another author: “Reading her is like trudging through a frozen snowfield in the dark. Even though her words seemed to have been written out of the wish to communicate, together they take on a frustrating opaqueness.” Unfortunately, this book has felt this way to me, at several points including the chapter, that contained this sentence. The author talks of reading various authors when she was young (and questioning if it was appropriate) and their similarities, but it wavers around a lot. However at the end of the chapter, her writing is very clear (discussing her difficulties in dealing with her mother). As I have said earlier, the writing ebbs and flows.

Ironically though this author is often concerned with giving away some of her self, from her Mom, reading her journals, to denying her fiction sometimes could be autobiographical, she has provided this book, which truly is. It is odd to me to go from so hidden, to then so transparent, especially at just a vulnerable time her in life. While my admitting to some self consciousness might seem as a universal complaint that all could understand, many of this author’s concerns are very personal to her, so again even more so unusual.

Finally I have had enough. After a chapter where the author debates various other authors (whom I don’t know and some I do) existentially on and on, I lost complete interest.
You know that friend that gets obsessed about a boy who is not interested and she has to parse every conversation for every nuance. This is what reading this book is like to me. Painful and tiresome and I quit at the 2/3rds mark. I only got that far because I wanted to review the book.

If you are into philosophy this book might be for you...It is clearly not for me. Gave it 2 stars as the writing is good in spots..but only a few.

The most important thing you need to pass the Practitioner Exam, at an ok price.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Since this is the definitive(and currently only) book for the newly created ITIL Practitioner certification, this book is essential for passing the exam. All the material you need to know for the exam is covered in this book. So this book gets points for being complete. There are occasional illustrations and charts included to help understand the concepts, including a helpful appendix with related topics. It can be a bit wordy at times, but I prefer too much information rather than too little.

I bought it on Kindle for $54. It's not a great deal considering the size of the book, but I guess considering that it is the ONLY one on the market they could have taken me for more. So Ill say the price is "OK".

ABOUT THE EXAM THE BOOK PREPARES YOU FOR:

I passed the exam with 80%. To prepare I read this book and took the two sample exams(which are free downloadable PDFs). I also have almost a decade of working in an organization that implements ITIL framework. Axelos currently only hosts "Sample Paper 2" on its website. I did a search for "Sample Paper 1" and found it on some other site. These sample exams are pretty terrible as far as providing clearly worded questions. That may be why they don't include SE1 anymore on their site, it was the worse of the two. I found many of the questions on the sample papers to be ambiguous as far as how to interpret the correct answer. In other words you can understand the content but still answer it wrong due to being unclear about what they are actually asking. So what Im trying to say is that in addition to this book take both of the sample exams(to be prepared for the ambiguity) and read the explanations to the answers so that you will more easily(although not completely) be able to decipher meanings to similar questions on the exam.

Good material

Little bit pricey for the size of the book, but it has good material. One note though, if you're going to take the test. It is an open book test. However, you can only bring an UNMARKED book. So if you like to highlight and write in the margins, you either don't get to use your book or you'll have to buy/borrow another one.

This is essential to anyone that is either heavily involved ...

This is essential to anyone that is either heavily involved in IT Service Management or has a passing interest in it. It brings many needed and refreshing views to ITIL as a whole and it does change your perspective about it to a degree. I do not lie when I say that some of the guidance here was sorely needed 8 or 10 years ago.

It is a bit pricey, even the Kindle edition, but it is worth every penny. And it is, of course, indispensable when going through the test.
