A brilliant guide to a brilliant novel.

I read this mainly because I was impressed by McDonald's book about American Humour, Laughing at the Darkness. This guide is aimed at a less specialist audience, but nevertheless exhibits the author's characteristically sharp critical eye. It provides an entertaining account of Heller's life, and a thoughtful, perceptive reading of his most famous book. He details the various positions critics have taken on the novel, and even has a section on those people who don't rate Catch-22 as a classic. I'd say it's the perfect book for anyone who finds this novel baffling (as I did when I read it as a teenager). It's a brilliant guide to a brilliant novel.

I have also just read McDonald's excellent book on the philosophy of humour, which I recommend: The Philosophy of Humour (Philosophy Insights)

About the Author

Henry F. Fradella earned a BA in psychology from Clark University, a master’s in forensic science and a law degree from The George Washington University, and a PhD in interdisciplinary justice studies from Arizona State University. He is currently a professor in and chair of the Department of Criminal Justice at California State University, Long Beach. His area of specialization is the social scientific study of courts and law. This includes research and teaching on the historical development of substantive, procedural, and evidentiary criminal law (including the courtroom acceptability of forensic and social scientific evidence, especially forensic psychological/psychiatric testimony); evaluation of law's effects on human behavior; the dynamics of legal decision making; and the nature, sources, and consequences of variations and changes in legal institutions or processes. He is the author or co-author of 8 books and 75 articles, reviews, and scholarly commentaries that have appeared in various periodicals, including American Journal of Criminal Law, Criminal Justice Policy Review, Criminal Law Bulletin, Journal of Contemporary Criminal Justice, Journal of Criminal Justice Education, Journal of Ethnicity in Criminal Justice, Journal of Law and Public Policy, Journal of Law and Sexuality, The Justice Systems Journal, Law and Psychology Review, The Prison Journal, and Western Criminology Review.

In-depth case studies, extensive and up-to-date with the DSM-5, this book covers everything from dispelling myths about psychopathy to neurodevelopmental disorders. I'm okay with this one...............

At first glance, this book looked as if it was going to be just another collection of old-fashioned "kitchen" recipes - the same old stuff that teaches you how to make a beeswax body cream using borax & lanolin. But this one was suprisingly a bit different. The author focuses mainly on the sourcing and use of fair trade and organic ingredients - with most if not all of the recipes formulated to feed & nourish the skin. I have tried and liked the massage "Chocolate Orange Body Butter Bar" made with pure raw cocoa powder (she has a seperate chapter dedicated to chocolate body potions). She even has a rhassoul mud hair treatment (great for softening & detoxing the hair) along with a simple shampoo using African Black Soap. Overall, I highly recommend this book.

Lovely book with lovely recipes

I have bought many DIY beauty books over the years, but this is the first one that actually used ingredients that can produce professional-looking skincare and cosmetics. Did you know that you can easily create a whipped skin cream with shea butter and some vegetable oil? Most books don't go down that route - they're either overly simple or they make life too complicated. Star Khechara is a great teacher of all things to do with holistic skincare and beauty, she knows her stuff and that shows from the content of this book. You might have to order a few ingredients off the internet but you will be then be able to make lots of lovely products for your own use at home. If you then decide you want to take it a step further to professional level, she also runs the School of Holistic Cosmetology which I found after reading this book.

One final tip - try the vegan banoffee pie recipe in the front... it is to die for and every carnivore I've served it to agrees.

This is a wonderful book!

I've reviewed over a dozen books lately, looking for natural recipes I'm not allergic to. Most say to use citric acid for a preservative. I'm allergic to corn & citrus, which citric acid is made from. This book is very refreshing & helpful! Of all the ones I've looked at, this is by far tops on my list! Many, many wonderful recipes I can really use, not have to substitute something. Thank you, Star!

Vocabulary builder for ESL learners.

Yes, like others say, I think this book is just for ESL learners. In the introduction of this book, it also refers this book is "for anyone from middle school age to adult". I do not think this is for highly educated native English speakers. For the learners, it might be a good vocabulary builders. Actually, I, as an adult ESL learner, like this book.

Enhance day to day communication for non-native speakers

I really like, am fond of, am partial to, this book. It is ideal for a advanced ESL speaker but it could also be useful for a less articulate native speaker.
The flaw of the book is that it has only one sample sentence for each vocabulary cluster. The list of synonyms is quite large but they don't always have exactly the same meaning (few synonyms have, for that matter) and there are no definitions so if the reader doesn't know any of the alternative words she would have to look it up in another reference/dictionary. It would be foolhardy to interchange words from the synonyms/alternatives list without first ascertaining their exact meaning, connotation and collocation.

They have a ton of words for the common word, but I feel like the majority of the words are not synonymous with each other.. They have entirely different meaning.. I think a better book is out there.
