History we weren't taught
By Chris Brown
This book lays down clearly the history of 'welfare' and other things within Britian from when it started to today. I couldn't put this book down, as it contained the history that we weren't taught at school and the decisions that have been made to end up with the society we have today in Britain. But it is equally relevent to how the welfare state has developed in other countries. Buy it read it, it will open your eyes as to why western society is heading towards a major disaster unless citizens of today do something about it.

The corruption of the British welfare state
By T. Burkard
Many Americans look to the European welfare state as the answer to the inequality and social problems that affect American society. In The Welfare State We're In, British journalist James Bartholomew demonstrates that the welfare state actually makes matters far worse. This book, which is extensively researched and extremely well-written, explains how well-meaning efforts to relieve distress have exacerbated exactly the problems they were meant to relieve. Bartholomew targets the full range of social services which were taken over by the state in the 20th century, everything from health and education to pensions and housing for the poor. In every case, he successfully deploys statistical and anecdotal evidence showing how bureaucracies-far from solving social problems-- have become dependent upon the perpetuation of the problems they are supposed to address. He shows how government handouts have corrupted morals by inviting fraud, and he shows just how widespead that fraud is. Among the most corrosive effects of the welfare state are the resentment and depression felt by those who become dependent upon handouts and services. For Americans, perhaps the most unsettling evidence is his account of the effects of welfare for single mothers. No one will be able to read this book and still believe that America has a lot to learn from the supposedly more humane and liberal cultures of Europe.

Review

“The Map Reader feels like a rich investigation and compilation, adding to the literature of this relatively overlooked visual culture and bringing together in one place a valuable scholarly documentation and discussion of this important visual medium, along with some suggestion of the enormous potential for where it’s going.” (Landscape Ecology, 1 March 2013)

"It is compulsory reading for ‘students, academics and lay readers interested in understanding the appeal and power of maps’. It deserves a wide reading audience." (Int. J. Environment and Pollution, 1 October 2013)

"But for anyone who wants to get the most out of a map, whatever medium it is in, it is fascinating. It is a text-book for map readers, written by map-makers". (Law Society Journal, 1 October 2011)

"I highly recommend the landmark anthology The Map Reader: Theories of Mapping Practice and Cartographic Representation edited by Martin Dodge, Rob Kitchin, and Chris Perkins, to any students, researchers, and interested non-professionals in the areas of cartography, mapping technology, GIScience, social sciences, the media, the visual arts, and industry who are seeking a complete resource on the topic of map making. The articles cover every aspect of this rapidly changing field, written by leading scholars in many very diverse disciplines." (Blog Business World, 2 October 2011)

"Written as a comprehensive guide to cover all of these disciplines The Map Reader ensures that the most important cartographic ideas are made available to researchers, students and cartography enthusiast alike." (PhysOrg.com, 25 May 2011)

'A Thousand Mappings'
By bieke cattoor
Maps to analyse, to store, to generate, to test, to represent, to amuse, to persuade, to enquire, to create...
The Map Reader opens up the 'widening and vibrant array of different kinds of mapping being employed by scholars'. Adopting a caleidoscopic take on maps and mapping, this book collects the most influential articles of the last half century and juxtaposes them to a careful selection of provocative writings, honouring the diversity and versatility of Maps and Mappings themselves.
Thorough as well as inspiring.

The Medical Science of House, M.D., by Andrew Holtz

  • How can a teenager adopted at birth nearly die because his real mother didn’t get a measles shot?
  • How can a husband’s faith in his wife’s fidelity determine whether radical treatment will cure her or kill her?

  • How can a missed eye doctor appointment reveal a genetic disease?

  • How can doctors choose the right course for a pregnant woman when one may kill her and the other would abort her fetus?

Answers to these questions and more are pursued every week on House, M.D. Premiering in November 2004, the darkly quirky medical drama introduced a compelling new character to prime-time television: the sarcastic, abrasive—and brilliant—Dr. Gregory House.

Week after week, House has held viewers’ attention with brilliant cast performances and intriguing diagnostic mysteries often solved with daring treatments. But how much of the medical detail is real and how much is fabricated? In The Medical Science of House, M.D., Andrew Holtz, a well-known medical journalist, reveals how medical detectives work—how they follow symptoms to their source. He examines each case in detail—and provides answers for every viewer who has ever wondered about the authenticity of their favorite show.

Good read
By AD
Like a lot of other people I'm sure, I started wondering how medically accurate the show House M.D. is. This book helps to answer that question, quite well in fact. Nothing complex - it's a pretty simple read and helps to satisfy your curiosity about the show. Keep in mind, it may shatter your hopes if you think a doctor like House could actually exist (and be successful) in our medical field today. However, in contrast he gives good overall review of the terminology and actual medicine used on the show. Recommended read if you have more then a passing interest in House.

A mouse about House
By Tally Ho
This book was a good start if you're interested in the science behind the popular TV series, "House."

My teenage son absolutely loved the book, and read it cover to cover before playing his new X-Box games at Christmas, which gives you an idea how much it appealed to him.

As an R.N. myself, I found the medical aspects of this book to be understandable, without talking over the head, or talking down to the casual reader. Where it falls down for me, is that Andrew Holtz is not a very charasmatic writer.

If only the book had the delivery of the series, this would have been a definite five-star read.

Good Medicine in House, MD?
By KC
This book provides solid insight into the medicine behind the drama in House, MD. Having often wondered about the medical accuracy of the show, reading Holtz's book answers those questions and gives background on some of the medical issues and on hospital practices.

Lean Production for Competitive Advantage: A Comprehensive Guide to Lean Methodologies and Management Practices, by John Nicholas

The Lean concepts and principles described in this book have revolutionized manufacturing practice and business conduct in a manner similar to what Henry Ford’s system did for mass manufacturing. Lean production however, involves much more than the adoption of methods and procedures, it requires a change in management philosophy that emphasizes relationship building, trust, and responsibility being conferred to frontline workers and suppliers.

Based on three decades of teaching experience, Lean Production for a Competitive Advantage: A Comprehensive Guide to Lean Methodologies and Management Practices introduces the Lean philosophy and illustrates the effective application of Lean tools with real-world case studies. From fundamental concepts to integrated planning and control in pull production and the supply chain, the text provides a complete introduction to Lean production. Coverage includes small batch production, setup reduction, pull production, preventive maintenance, standard operations, as well as synchronizing and scheduling lean operations. Detailing the key principles and practices of Lean production, the text also:

  • Illustrates effective implementation techniques with case studies from a range of industries
  • Includes questions and completed problems in each chapter
  • Explains how to effectively partner with suppliers and employees to accomplish productivity goals

Designed for studentswho havea basic foundation in production and operations management, the text provides a thorough understanding of the fundamental principles of Lean. It also offers practical know-how for implementing a culture of continuous improvement on the shop floor or in the office, creating a heightened sense of responsibility and pride in all stakeholders involved, and enhancing productivity and efficiency to improve the bottom line.

For the classroom or the factory, here's the single most comprehensive lean book
By RJS
Lean manufacturing has emerged as a centerpiece of curricula in operations and production management. Finally, there is a subject-matter textbook worthy of building courses around: John Nicholas’s Lean Production for Competitive Advantage. The bulk of the book, in Section II (seven chapters, 339 pp.), is a comprehensive and adroit discussion of lean fundamentals: Small-lot production; Setup-time reduction; Maintaining and improving equipment; Pull production systems; Focused factories and group technology; Work cells and cellular manufacturing; Standard operations; and Quality and the Source and Mistake-Proofing. Setting the stage for those “lean core” topics are four chapters. The first, Race without a Finish Line, reviews the competitive purposes of lean, its historical evolution, and how it has become “imperative” for manufacturers today. The three chapters of Section I continue with Fundamentals of Continuous Improvement; Value Added and Waste Elimination; and Customer-Focused Quality. The book winds up with Section III: chapters on Uniform Flow and Mixed-Model Scheduling; Synchronizing and Balancing the Process; and Lean Production in the Supply Chain.

Besides plentiful examples, end-of-chapter questions, and (where applicable) problems, what catches the eye are special insights. For example, under Setup times (Ch. 6), a section called, Abolish the Setup, states that instead of a single, expensive machine for producing many kinds of parts, lean advises several less-expensive machines, each dedicated to a single part. With machines devoted to one part, or similar kinds of parts, “changeover between parts is eliminated or is reduced to trivial steps.” That discussion includes reference to multiple simple machines that can simultaneously produce many products—a concept that has become a contemporary lean topic generally referred to as concurrent production.

The book does not neglect the human factor, blending, for example, labor flexibility into various chapters: The cellular manufacturing chapter refers to a record of employee skills “ …maintained for work-cell staffing assignments and pay-for-skill incentives.” With multiple skills, workers “…should be rotated daily or weekly among the stations within a cell, or in different cells in a focused factory ….” The chapter on focused factories adds that “ …each worker might also be responsible for machine setups, routine machine maintenance, quality control, and job scheduling,” which requires considerable training, but resulting in “…less boredom and, possibly, greater satisfaction.”

Although this book serves particularly well as a college textbook, it also can fill a need for lean training of practitioners. Many of the books used in industry devote inordinate attention to studying, organization, and preparing for lean; and give scant attention to the core elements of lean (cells, quick setup, kanban, multi-skilling, etc.) that actually change processes to improve competitive response. In short, this book by Dr. Nicholas deserves a prominent place among educators, and students; trainers and practitioners of lean manufacturing.

finally an production operations management textbook centered on Lean
By Luc
Been looking for it for ages, but never found a good enough operations management textbook that finally takes Lean as an all-encompassing operations theme. But that is exactly what businesses of today need and do. Granted, I take 'Lean' as defined in it's most enlarged form (including total quality, TOC, agility for example). This book is a mile higher compared to the so many expensive, poorly structured operations/production management textbooks that are in their n-th edition (cash cows for authors and publishers) but structurally based on older views (of the 80s or even before) on the subject field. Operations management is a fantastic management field and more than ever a basis for competitive edge!
Not that it's all perfect though - it's a bit too focused on 'production' and less on 'operations' in non-production environments (hospitals, offices) and I'm missing a few Lean topics that should have been included (waiting lines, failure demand, TWI, hoshin kanri, suma's, mizusumashi), but it's the best around so-far, by far! And it comes with ppt slides, and exercises and an instructor's manual. Great book!

Not Keeping for Reference
By Travis R.
I had to buy this as a textbook for a class, but I will not be keeping it. I found it to be very poorly written and was vague about most of the subjects covered. Most of the homework questions were missing information to complete and/or required way too many assumptions to be a useful method of practicing concepts. Furthermore, a lot of the homework questions were subjective. I think you can gain a better understanding of Lean Principles by googling it. I was not a fan of this book and I do not recommend it.

Too Dumb to Fail: How the GOP Betrayed the Reagan Revolution to Win Elections (and How It Can Reclaim Its Conservative Roots), by Matt K.

From a leading voice among young conservatives, an impassioned argument that to stay relevant the Republican Party must look beyond short-term electoral gains and re-commit to historic conservative values.

In 1963 Richard Hofstadter published his landmark book Anti-Intellectualism in American Life. Today, Matt Lewis argues, America's inclination toward simplicity and stupidity is stronger than ever, and its greatest victim is the Republican Party. Lewis, a respected conservative columnist and frequent guest on MSNBC's Morning Joe, eviscerates the phenomenon of candidates with a "no experience required" mentality and tea party "patriots" who possess bluster but few core beliefs.

Lewis traces the conservative movement's roots, from Edmund Burke to William F. Buckley, and from Goldwater's loss to Reagan's landslide victory. He highlights visionary thinkers who understood nuance and deep ideology and changed the course of the nation. As we approach the 2016 presidential election, Lewis has an urgent message for fellow conservatives: embrace wisdom, humility, qualifications, and inclusion--or face extinction.

Review
"Lewis is a product of the conservative counterestablishment as reinvented by the Internet revolution... Lewis' knockabout style is a relief.... [He] argues that conservatives must recover the enthusiasm for ideas they had in the Reagan era."―New York Times Book Review (cover review)

"I've been reading Matt for a long time. He's always incisive and thoughtful and this book is both. Anyone who cares about the future of the Republican party should read it."―Peggy Noonan, Wall Street Journal columnist

"Matt K. Lewis takes the most unconventional possible approach to Washington journalism: he's completely honest all the time. Not everyone likes him for it, but that's their problem. Like Matt himself, this book is cheerful, smart and insightful as hell. Buy two copies."―Tucker Carlson, editor-in-chief of The Daily Caller, co-host of FOX & Friends Weekend

"Matt K. Lewis has fought in the trenches of some of our hottest political battles, occupying a unique position at the intersection of conservative politics and the popular culture. He brings a rare perspective to everything he writes about, and manages to look at what everyone else is looking at and see what no one sees."―Yuval Levin, editor of National Affairs

"Matt K. Lewis has written an insightful book about the roots of the conservative movement-and just how far Washington Republicans have diverged from that proud past. Too Dumb to Fail is a major achievement from one of conservatism's most important voices, and it could not come at a more critical time."―Joe Scarborough, host of MSNBC's Morning Joe

"Matt K. Lewis is one of the sharpest and most principled political commentators of our day. Too Dumb to Fail is a lively and fascinating read for any person confounded by the state of today's Republican Party. Lewis provides some much-needed tough love as well as a clear way forward for the GOP. If Republicans are smart, they'll make this book mandatory reading."―Kirsten Powers, New York Times-bestselling author of The Silencing

"Very few books about politics get my 'must read' stamp, but Matt Lewis' is one of them. Every conservative feeling as though the movement has collapsed, every Republican despairing of ever winning the White House, every independent who has no idea what to do or whom to support, should read this book immediately."―Hugh Hewitt, host of The Hugh Hewitt Show

"Too Dumb to Fail traces the evolution of conservative philosophy from Aristotle to Burke to the present in a clear and readable way that reminds us why conservatives need big ideas--and why America needs conservatism."―Arthur C. Brooks, President, American Enterprise Institute

"Too Dumb to Fail... functions as a smart, sobering pre-mortem on 2016. Now, most books about 'fixing' conservatism are written by liberal concern-trolls who secretly want to kill it. But Lewis is an actual, real-deal conservative.... This, ultimately, is what Lewis really wants: A conservative movement that honors its intellectuals, that works through its ideological problems honestly, and that doesn't rush to glorify hucksters.... If you put Donald Trump or Sarah Palin back in 1980, they couldn't last a week in the ring with the Gipper. Because back then, conservatives expected more from their leaders. Matt Lewis thinks we should expect more today, too. He's probably right."―Jonathan V. Last, The Weekly Standard

"[Lewis] does not shy away from naming names.... This book is far from a standard D.C. 'if only they listened to me' critique.... Conservatives who feel dismayed at the current state of affairs should run out and buy Lewis' book."―Henry Olsen, The Weekly Standard

"A good book... Lewis writes with panache."―The Buffalo News

"Too Dumb to Fail provides the Republican Party a roadmap to get back to its intellectual foundations. With the rise of Donald Trump and Sarah Palin, the book perfectly represents the state of the Republican Party and where it's headed if it doesn't return to its core beliefs... Prescient."―Christian Schneider, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel

"Lewis ... has probed the true makeup of today's GOP."―Washington Post

"Lewis' book offers a wise and far-reaching and brave take on how we got here and what conservatives must do to enlist the 'accumulated wisdom of the past to make our future even brighter.'... Too Dumb to Fail is worth reading and pondering, because we are watching many of the themes Lewis pinpoints play out in real time ... Too Dumb to Fail is a great summing up. It's also practical and specific. Earnest, witty and well-meaning, Lewis is more of a truth-teller than a diplomat or glad-hander. He names names.... This will not make [Lewis] popular. After the November 2016 elections, however, it may make Matt Lewis something of a prophet."―Washington Times

"Right from the beginning, Lewis shows the courage to take on conventional wisdoms in modern conservatism, and that alone makes his book essential."―Craig Shirley, Newsmax

"A great read... Really worth reading and thinking about."―Newt Gingrich (via Facebook)

“All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.” Edmund Burke
By Kristi Richardson
I firmly believe that you cannot be a political animal and not read what the opposition is writing. I must admit that some pundits I can only read so much and then I have to put it away, because it is not based on facts or ideas but on vitriol and stirring things up by repeating falsehoods. This book by Matt K. Lewis is not like these others. I read it all the way through and enjoyed it for the most part.

Mr. Lewis takes us through the beginning of the Conservative movement and I found his history engrossing. I used to laugh at William F. Buckley’s way of speaking but I never doubted his education and spirit. Nowadays the GOP and the Conservatives have dumbed their selves down so much, that if you don’t act as if you never read a book or newspaper, you won’t be elected. He shows examples of that with Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. If you think about it, how do you go to Yale and not get some knowledge? How do you become a doctor and not have some brains? Yet the people running for office act as if they are just regular folks and don’t get any knowledge outside of the Bible. In the end that will hurt their message.

Mr. Lewis points out specific steps that Conservatives need to take to modernize not moderate. I think our nation is stronger when both sides are strong and viable. The way it’s going now, the Democratic Party may have lopsided power in the future if the GOP doesn’t learn from this book.

I am a lifelong Democrat and while I used to say a “bleeding heart liberal”, as I age I will say I am more moderate and definitely not a democratic socialist. I think Mr. Lewis’ book is well written and should be required reading for anyone interested in politics.

Too Dumb to Fail is a winner.
By Steve
Too Dumb To Fail is a page turner for sure. Given the title of the book, you might suspect the book was written by a vitriolic blonde bomb-thrower from Fox News. Fortunately for those of us who want to win and grow the movement, this is not the case. The subtitle of the book illustrates its true purpose: How the GOP Betrayed the Reagan Revolution to Win Elections (and How It Can Reclaim Its Conservative Roots).

Too Dumb to Fail moves at a nice pace because Matt Lewis is an interesting writer. He writes clearly and does not overcomplicate topics that are easy to muddy-up. The difference between Matt Lewis and so many other writers is that he cares about the conservative movement. He is not looking back at 40 to 60 years of activism and then condemning everything about the future. Matt Lewis is as much a part of the future of our movement as he is a part of its past. Some of us campaign-types heard Matt teach sessions at party conventions. Matt's ability to teach us to talk, is perhaps what makes him such a good writer. He is not a lecturer; he is a teacher.

That eventually leads us to a really interesting chapter that discusses the hucksters who fleece our movement of dollars, yet produce nothing. Lewis humorously identifies these people as the Con$ervative Movement. For instance, Lewis writes about a group of PACs that spent roughly $54 million, but not quite $4 million of that was actually spent on getting Republicans elected. $50 million in conservative dollars wasted, possibly extorted, just in the 2014 election cycle alone. That story will get your blood boiling.

Lewis similarly discusses the 2013 Virginia race for Governor where Ken Cuccinelli nobly took on Terry McAuliffe. One group took in over $2 million saying they were going to help get Cuccinelli elected, yet they spent "less than one-half of one percent" on Cuccinelli's losing campaign. Lewis also briefly touches upon "Joe the Plumber" (a phenomenon I never understood) and his brief stay in the limelight of the Con$ervative Movement.

There are so many great examples in this book that really highlight the problems we are up against, even within our own movement. Lewis points to absurd statistics thrown out by Donald Trump, which is one thing. Then we realize he got the phony statistics from one of Ann Coulter's books, and the statistics have been thoroughly discredited. Then there is Donald Trump's lack of understanding that the money that funds Planned Parenthood "is fungible." Followed later by Ann Coulter declaring, this time via Twitter, in response to Donald Trump's immigration plan, “I don’t care if [Donald Trump] wants to perform abortions in White House after this immigration policy paper.”

Lewis puts great emphasis throughout this book on intellectual thought in the Republican party, more of it in the distant past than in its present. Ours is a movement founded upon solid philosophical and intellectual arguments and principles. Lewis is not writing this to tell us that we are dumb now. He is telling us why this intellectual foundation matters. "When you lose intellectuals, you lose popular culture and, before you know it, you've lost the culture war," writes Lewis.

Why did Obama’s "you didn't build that" remark not really matter to the outcome of the 2012 election? Lewis has an interesting take on this in the wider view of our culture wars.

Lewis challenges us not to simply walk away from pop culture, but rather to influence it and affect it. "Christian conservatives must work to authentically engage the culture, instead of trying to ape what's already popular." As Lewis notes later, "By first rejecting the culture and turning inward, and then focusing almost solely on politics, conservatives now find themselves increasingly shut out of major conversations that average Americans are interested in." Lewis arrives at a sensible and pragmatic solution, "The answer is for conservatives to make good art, not necessarily to make conservative art."

Do you think pop culture and the conservative movement do not go together? Lewis correctly points out that, "Winning elections means having a tent big enough to attract a majority." He follows that up later with an entire chapter titled, "Modernize, Don't Moderate." He was right to do this because too often the "big tent" concept gets labeled as something it is not, and those in pursuit of a bigger tent are labeled as well.

We have some demographic realities to face. Whether it is race, education, age, location, or marital status, our movement is losing ground in many of the numbers that matter. Lewis writes, "the conservative moment appears to want to keep the GOP a party almost exclusively for older, whiter, more rural Americans." He continues, "For Reagan-Kemp conservatives, this is a philosophical and mathematical problem." Rather than "doubling down on cohorts that are losing population," Lewis is instead suggesting ways that we can grow the movement without dumbing down our principles.

On election day 2012, when Mitt Romney would fall short of unseating an incumbent President, exit poll respondents were asked about four qualities of each candidate, Romney and Obama. Mitt Romney won on three of the four qualities, but it was the one quality that Obama won that made all the difference. On the question about which candidate "cares about people like me," Obama won in a landslide. Lewis tells us what that number was, and why it matters.

Lewis has a message for talk radio hosts, read the book to see it, it is important.

So, what should conservatives do today? Lewis writes, "The real answer, I suggest, is to look to the Reagan model-but not in a way that looks backward or assumes nominating a hard-core conservative is a panacea. Reagan looked to the future, and so should we." This will not be easy, change is tough. But change can also be our missing ingredient. The reality about the Right, is as Lewis notes, "it has to be better, stronger, tougher, smarter." Too Dumb to Fail can help with all of that.

Finally, readers will get twenty book suggestions at the end. I am going to do what every author wants done and suggest you get a copy of the book and read the list (and the entire book) for yourself. Lewis' book suggestions are not typical. If you go in expecting to see books by Sean Hannity, Dick Morris or Michael Savage, or any of Ann Coulter's books, you will be disappointed. This list is deeper than all of that.

There is so much more in this book. For instance, what is pastor Tim Keller doing that is worth replicating within the conservative movement? What are "Ideological Immigrants"? Why are we implored to "Teach Your Children Well"? What about think tanks that are now becoming activists as well? What is "The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind"? And what is the reality about how to "Appeal to Hispanics"?

This all amounts to a very interesting book at a very good time.

I have intentionally been vague on many of the topics discussed in Too Dumb to Fail because I want to really encourage you to read this book. It is a quick read, it is succinct and well written, it is a critique and not a condemnation, and perhaps as important, it is aspirational. Too Dumb to Fail is a book I will go back to over the next few years and make sure I have properly implemented many of the suggestions that Lewis makes.

As a final tease for Too Dumb to Fail, any book that can recall a scene from the baseball movie Bull Durham, which involves a great scene between Crash Davis and Nuke LaLoosh, and can relate that to political messaging, that's a job well done. Enjoy.

A Unique Perspective into the Conservative Movement! A Must Read! A+++
By Carbonlord
Matt Lewis is a super conservative writer, he is independent minded and an excellent columnist. I’ve seen him a number of times on CNN, ABC’s Nightline and HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher. I was fortunate enough to get an advance copy of this book, which was an eye opener all the way to the end. I was looking forward to this book, after watching him speak so many times before.

Imagine that in the infancy of the book, Matt started with a purpose of showing us the sort of populist anti-intellectualism that has been bubbling over and throughout our current political campaigns of the Republican party? Could he have ever guessed that Trump would be there, now? Perhaps he knew?

In his quote, “empty-headed talking point reciters, rookie politicians who’ve never managed anything in their lives, media clowns such as Donald Trump, dim bulbs in tight pants or short skirts, professionally outraged shout-fest talking heads and total political neophytes,” He stipulates how he feels where the conservative movement has been led to.

He was also quoted, stating;

"Although I think that conservative media outlets help — they've helped expose liberal hypocrisy, forced stories into the mainstream — there's also a downside."

“they don't even have to say anything conservative; all they have to do is criticize Obama and we go gaga and we eat it up.”

Lewis talks about the age of politicians trying to create more hypocrisy and outrage, than in the actual principles of governing. Creating a vicious circle of this, in order to obtain more funding, to create more outrage and so it goes on and on and on…..

Matt Lewis concludes his book, by believing that conservatives really need to bring more enthusiasm about their originality of ideas, as they had shown in the Reagan era. I thought the book was insightful, how he traced an insightful book the roots of the conservative movement and showed, in his options, just how far they have strayed form their original ideals. Hope it Helps:)

Excellent read.
By Joshua Smith
I've been hooked on the Sly Cooper series since I was a wee little tyke. The story in the games has always been fascinating, mysterious, and intriguing. The book by Michael Anthony Steele revolves around the story of the second and third games. At least- that's what I understand from reading it. It's worth picking up, just make sure you get a copy that's in good condition. These are fairly old book now, and it's not uncommon to find a copy with stressed or cracked spines, pages with slight yellowing or even previous owners signatures.

Good for kids and fans but not worth the cost.
By Ernest B.
Book was very entertaining and my grandson loved it. my problem was the cost and quality. The book was very small and looked like something someone had done on their printer at home. I dont mind a book like that but for the price I paid, I expected a top quality book.

A Slow Death: 83 Days of Radiation Sickness, by NHK TV Crew

Japan's worst nuclear radiation accident took place at a uranium reprocessing facility in Tokaimura, northeast of Tokyo, on 30 September 1999. The direct cause of the accident was cited as the depositing of a uranyl nitrate solution--containing about 16.6 kg of uranium, which exceeded the critical mass--into a precipitation tank. Three workers were exposed to extreme doses of radiation.

Hiroshi Ouchi, one of these workers, was transferred to the University of Tokyo Hospital Emergency Room, three days after the accident. Dr. Maekawa and his staff initially thought that Ouchi looked relatively well for a person exposed to such radiation levels. He could talk, and only his right hand was a little swollen with redness. However, his condition gradually weakened as the radioactivity broke down the chromosomes in his cells.

The doctors were at a loss as to what to do. There were very few precedents and proven medical treatments for the victims of radiation poisoning. Less than 20 nuclear accidents had occurred in the world to that point, and most of those happened 30 years ago. This book documents the following 83 days of treatment until his passing, with detailed descriptions and explanations of the radiation poisoning.

Review
“Stylistically resembling a fictional narrative, this grim chronicle of Ouchi’s deterioration demonstrates the humanity and pyschology of the medical profession in extreme situations. In that sense, it᾿s an interesting companion to [Osamu Tezuka’s] Black Jack manga. Think of it as such a nightmarish episode of House that as a result of watching it you resolve never to tune into the series again.”
—Firefox News

“Harnessing the atom’s energy can help, even save, mankind or lead to its destruction. This is the sad, cautionary tale of things gone awry, a noble effort by Japanese physicians to save Mr. Ouchi’s life and of our limited ability to deal with the consequences of mistakes in this arena.”
—Robert Peter Gale, M.D., Ph.D., D.Sc., F.A.C.P. (Hon),
UCLA Medical Center

“Radiation injuries are potentially complex, often involving a combination of different types of radiation energy. The Tokaimura accident reminds us of these complexities as well as the importance of accurate information flow from the site of the incident to the healthcare provideer in the hospital. New knowledge was gained regarding optimal management of acute radiation toxicity.”
—Nicholas Dainiak, M.D., F.A.C.P. Yale University School of Medicine
Chairman of Medicine, Bridgeport Hospital

In the end, only the heart tissue was left intact.
By Amazon Customer
This is a book about a man named Ouchi whose chromosomes were destroyed by a blast of neutron rays while working in unsafe conditions in a uranium processing facility. For 83 days, a crack team of doctors, nurses, and medical experts from several countries try to keep him alive. Because Ouchi's chromosomes have been destroyed, his body cannot generate new cells to replace the dead ones. His skin falls off. His mucus membranes disappear. He is in constant pain. He suffers massive internal hemorrhages and the medical staff have to constantly pump fluids and nutrients into his body to keep him alive. His organs fail, one by one, and their functions are taken over by various medical apparatus. At various points, Ouchi's doctors and nurses question whether or not what they are doing is the right thing to do. That is to say, are they actually helping him, or are they just endlessly prolonging his agony?

This is a slim but tough book.It goes into gruesome but necessary detail about the deterioration of a human body afflicted by neutron beam radiation. It is told in a straightforward reportorial style that goes into thoroughgoing technical detail but not so much that the average reader cannot follow along. It also gives space to the emotional turmoil the medical staff underwent as they battled to keep Ouchi alive.

In some ways, this is a book about the dangers of atomic radiation, but it is also a strange kind of existential novel where the main character's mental state is largely unknown at the height of his suffering. Ouchi was under heavy sedation for much of his sickness and he was unable to communicate in any detail what his thoughts and feelings were. The book seems to suggest that had he been awake his suffering would've been monstrous. The medical staff did what they thought was best even in the face of a hopeless situation.

This is harsh story taken from real life and told in harrowing but necessary detail.

The Day After, indeed...
By Her Majesty, the Empress Eugenie
There can be no spoiler alert here, as the title tells you the end of the story. Also, the vibrant yellow blocks on the book cover gradually turn a sickly green. The 83rd block is black. Goodbye.

I read "A Slow Death" in two hours and have been disturbed about it ever since. Despite the efforts of some of the world's most talented and compassionate medical professionals, Mr. Ouchi was doomed from the blue flash. This book describes the hope of success and the grim progression of the inevitable. Intricate medical procedures and nuclear physics were explained in a way that did not bore or confuse me, and did not cause me to lose sight of the humanity of the suffering patient.

After watching some Cold War movies I was interested in learning about what happened to people who were exposed to high levels of radiation. In the movies people grew pale, threw up a lot, and died; I knew that couldn't be the entire story. Radiation Sickness is described on the internet as including things like vomiting, hair loss, skin hemorrhages, bleeding, loss of white blood cells, pain, delirium and often death, but that seemed vague. This book, however, explained in detail how these symptoms (and several unexpected others) actually played out in the life of a thirty-five year old husband and father. Afterwards I felt a little guilty for reading it and peering into the window of such agony just to satisfy my curiosity.

The gentle and amiable patient did not realize for several days that he was what is termed a "walking ghost". While he appeared to be fine for a while, all of his cells were damaged and his death was certain. Pain medication to make him comfortable when symptoms arose would have ordinarily been the only intervention while awaiting the inevitable, but in his case the hospital staff and his family did not tell him that he received a lethal dose and maintained that fiction almost until the day he died. The doctors kept giving him transplants, transfusions, skin grafts, injections and cardiac massage -- a heroic effort overall -- to keep him alive until maybe something would actually help. Since severe radiation sickness is not common, these folks had no real idea what they could do and dealt with symptoms as they arose. And arose. And arose. The fact that Mr. Ouchi survived for months is nothing short of amazing, but perhaps honor and hope came at too high a cost: his incomprehensible CONSCIOUS suffering.

Despite the horrific subject, the book was engaging. I came to care about all of the real people involved. I think I learned a lot. I'm glad I read it, and intend to read it again more slowly.

Not well translated and edited but extremely fascinating piece of non fiction
By Aaron Birchfield
This book gets 4 stars mainly because I find the subject matter so intriguing. The book was originally written in Japanese and then translated to English. It reads as though the writer knew English as a second language well enough to write a book but didn't understand the subtle nuances that make reading English fluid. As a result, any attempt the author makes to convey the emotional changes of the family and medical team reads too flowery. This contrasts with the rest of the book which places a strong emphasis on the specifics of how a nuclear criticality occurs and what went wrong in this accident. It details every symptom Ouchi experienced and every medical procedure performed. The book provides sufficient background as well. This aspect of the book is done exceptionally well and answered many questions I had about this incident. Despite some discord in structure, this book is a truly fascinating case study in radiation treatment and is well worth the read.
