beginner's / no

I got this book and was excited thinking that it was the ideal book for beginners, this was all based on how the book is advertised.

Needless to say it is not for beginners. For beginners the book to purchase is Andy Harris' PHP 5/MySQL Programming for the Absolute Beginner. So what about this Ninja book. I feel it is for intermediate users who are already familiar with PHP code and the way web servers operate.

It moves too fast for a beginner, while Harris' book is the slow train where you can do the ABC of this Apache/PHP/MySQL complexity.

This is a great book, no doubt about it. The information and process discussed is matchless in a way.

A solid grounding in PHP and MySQL

First to answer the obvious question; will this book turn you into a PHP and MySQL ninja? Well, no. That's not in any way to say that it's a bad book just that it's being oversold by the title. What it will do is give you a solid grounding in both PHP and MySQL in a readable and easy to digest manner. Perhaps a more accurate title would be something like "PHP and MySQL: Yutz to User" though that doesn't have quite the same ring to it!

Anyway, with that gripe out of the way onto the book. The contents are pretty much as you would expect; a guide to installation, an introduction to using the technologies and then a project based approach to using the PHP and MySQL in anger. Coverage of MySQL is, I think, somewhat more comprehensive than that of PHP but given that it is a much more compact and focused piece of software that is only to be expected. You do get good coverage of some of the more useful and important parts of PHP such as regular expressions and session management along with the basics and also a rather nice chapter on structured programming. I particularly appreciated the fact that object oriented programmed wasn't put forward as the one true way for building structured software, as it so often is, and that procedural programming with a library of functions got a look in. It's personal bias I know but for object oriented programming I prefer to use a language designed in an OO manner from the ground up. On the MySQL side you get pretty much everything you might need from a primer in relational database design up to some fairly advanced areas such as database replication and backed up with appendices of MySQL syntax and functions. There's no similar appendix of PHP syntax and functions, but as PHP runs to thousands of functions it's no great surprise.

So overall is this a good book? Well yes; it's well written, engaging and covers the basics of PHP pretty well and of MySQL very well. Is it every book you will need to get your PHP and MySQL ninja blackbelt? No, but then no book ever will be. While you could pick up PHP & MySQL Novice to Ninja having never programmed before you might struggle a little bit. It's probably most appropriate for those who have dabbled in a bit of programming, understand the basics of variables, functions et al and would like to move into the world of PHP and MySQL.

A great book to get started

I obtained a copy of PHP & MySQL, 5th edition, because I have taken over support for a Wordpress/MySQL website with phpAdmin installed. I am a desktop developer, so I hoped this book would give be a jump-start to understand my server environment. I was not disappointed.

Kevin Yanks communicates his content clearly, without any fluff. I have been programming for many decades, but I could barely spell PHP. Kevin's explanation using example after example made picking up the basic syntax a breeze. There were a couple of ideas that I had to re-read to get the real gist, but I congratulate Kevin on his commitment to simplicity. As a writer and instructor myself, I give him big kudos for adding complexity in small, incremental steps.

One of his most complex topics is Regular Expressions. This is an area that becomes quite obtuse very quickly. I am a passable novice at RegExes, and I admit I had to read some pages a couple of times, but I learned a lot! Great job, Kevin.

PHP & MySQL spends a lot of time on MySQL, as it should. Relational databases are pervasive, but they are also rife with areas of difficulties: not the least of which is the SQL language itself. Kevin does an excellent job of explaining MySQL installation, Administration, and common Functions and Queries.

Some reviewers have said this is not a book for total beginners. This may be true: a total beginner may not understand what a for-loop is, or when to use it. But the book's preface clearly states: "This book is aimed at intermediate and advanced web designers..." For anyone with a knowledge of one or two programming languages, and some HTML, this book should not be a major challenge.

I was looking for a broad survey of PHP and MySQL, not a deep-dive into arcane syntax that I might never see, much less use. I am very satisfied that this is exactly what PHP & MySQL gave me. I am moving into more low-level areas now, but I got a great jump-start from Kevin's excellent 5th edition.

About the Author
Andrew Davison received his Ph.D. from Imperial College in London in 1989. He was a lecturer at the University of Melbourne for six years before moving to Prince of Songkla University in Thailand in 1996. He has also taught in Bangkok, Khon Kaen, and Hanoi. His research interests include scripting languages, logic programming, visualization, and teaching methodologies. This latter topic led to an interest in teaching games programming in 1999. His O'Reilly book, "Killer Game Programming in Java", was published in 2005.

First of all, I am a self-taught game programming novice. However, I have made a few simple games in java previously.

Almost none of the code in this book will compile as written. However, it's not the fault of the author. It's just that many of the java classes that are utilized in this book are now deprecated; e.g., J3D timer. Also, a lot of the techniques that are used in the book are just not the best way to go anymore. If you have gone through a basic java programming book before, like "The Art and Science of Java" by Eric Roberts, then you will know about Java documentation and will be able to figure out how to correct the problems. Ideally, you will use an IDE like Eclipse, which will point you to potential solutions to the errors in the code you get from the book.

However, I think that jumping straight to this book from basic Java is a bad idea. I believe that the best option is to try out Greenfoot or Bluejay, which are free, contemporary, and have a good community. After you learn those, then this book makes a nice paperback reference, or solutions manual, to potential problems that you may need help solving.

Once again, I'm just a novice, so my opinion should not really be highly regarded; this is just my impression as of now. Feel free to comment me and let me know if you think there is a better way or if my interpretation is specious.

Slightly Outdated, but Great at Explaining - Minus Several Typos in Kindle Version

As you can tell by the publishing date, this book is rather old. Keeping that in mind, this book has a lot of good information which many beginning programmers can use. It is slightly more advanced than the description states, but there is nothing that can't be understood with a little investigating.
This book is very good at explaining exactly what methods to use, what they do specifically, and why.

There is one very big NEGATIVE:
I purchased the Kindle edition of this book, which appears to be littered with random typos. This is not a big deal when reading through the actual sentences, but it really screws things up when reading through the code and trying to copy or understand it. In many places there are parenthesis which shouldn't exist or are missing. I've also found one case of a random number appearing in the code which should not have been there. It was very confusing since it appeared in the middle of the equation.
I assume these mistakes were created when transferring the book to a digital format, but I feel it is inexcusable to allow so many typos in something meant to be copied by beginners. Several coding newbies might not realize how out of place some of these typos are and will therefore not be able to easily discover why the code is not working.
If you encounter this problem yourself, the author's website has all of the source code available for download. This will allow you to look through his actual code and see where it differs from the book. I found this to be very useful to make sure what I was seeing was actually a typo and not my eyes playing tricks on me. ([...])

I would rate this book as 4/5 if not for the typos. I do not know if the hard copy has them as well.

A great supplement for people who want to use Java to its fullest gaming capacity and still want to look elsewhere for ideas.

Great for an introductory class

As someone who has spent nearly 30 years teaching philosophy I am always on the lookout for textbooks that have substance but are also accessible to the student without any previous background in philosophy. "Ethical Choices" by Richard Burnor and Yvonne Raley is one such book. Although not an in-depth study of ethical theory (nor does it claim to be), the book provides an easy-to-understand and generally accurate overview of moral relativism, egoism, utilitarianism, deontological ethics, natural law ethics, virtue ethics, the ethics of care, and religious ethics.

In addition, at the end of each chapter there are several brief case studies designed to allow the student to apply what he or she has learned in the chapter to practical issues. As a result, although "Ethical Choices" is primarily a text in theoretical rather than applied ethics, instructors who feel the need to stress application can use these studies as a way of accomplishing this goal. Along with these case studies, at the end of each chapter there is a set of "Thought Questions" designed to aid the student in further reflection on the issues covered in the chapter.

I would highly recommend this book as a text for an introductory class in ethics, particularly if the instructor supplemented the text with some primary source material.

Great learning tool for an intro into Ethics

Read this for a class I was taking. I must say you do learn quite a bit about Morality, Philosophy, Ethics, all in a concise and simple way with one philosophy flowing into another, each being compared and contrasted against one another. In the end Kantian ethics wins out according to the authors, at least that's how I perceived it. But it's all one gray area, very subjective, yet this book tries to remove subjectivity from the discussion, although it does, in fact, raise a few questions that are never completely answered which I believe every person must decide whether or not his or her own morality dictates a certain philosophy is indeed the morally righteous way to go.

About the Author

Jason Brennan is Associate Professor of Strategy, Economics, Ethics, and Public Policy at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, and, by courtesy, Associate Professor of Philosophy. He is the author of Why Not Capitalism? (Routledge, 2014), Compulsory Voting: For and Against, with Lisa Hill (2014), Libertarianism: What Everyone Needs to Know (2012), The Ethics of Voting (2011), and A Brief History of Liberty, with David Schmidtz (2010).

Peter Jaworski is Assistant Teaching Professor of Strategy, Economics, Ethics, and Public Policy at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business. Prior to joining the faculty at Georgetown, Peter was Visiting Research Professor at Brown University’s Political Theory Project. He is a senior fellow with the Canadian Constitution Foundation and serves on the Board of Directors of the Institute for Liberal Studies.

Clear philosophical defense of markets

Markets Without Limits is a clear philosophical defense of the claim that there are no inherent limits to markets. What the authors Brennan and Jaworski (B&J) mean by this is that “if you may do it for free, then you may do it for money” (10). So, if you may possess water for free, you may also sell it. If you may have sex without paying for it, you may also buy it. Additionally, since you may not possess child pornography, you may not sell or buy it either. Since you may not murder for free, you may not murder for a price. These are not limits on the markets per se. They are limits on human behavior irrespective of markets.

The book is clear in two important ways. First, stylistically, it is written in a straightforward way. The chapters are relatively short: making them more focused and to the point. There is little in the way of jargon – and they make an effort to define carefully unavoidable technical verbiage.

Second, they make great effort to make sure that the arguments they are criticizing or advancing are presented as clearly and as logically as possible. I found myself frequently raising a concern or possible objection in the margins only to have that concern or objection discussed in the next paragraph or section. It got a little eerie at times—as if they were reading my mind!

They do a great job of presenting the anti-commodification arguments clearly and fairly. In fact, I think they do a better job of making the anti-commodification case than most of the anti-commodification theorists themselves. Their broad topology of the different criticisms helps to clarify and focus the arguments for these points and their criticisms.

Markets Without Limits

Brennan and Jaworski have written a remarkably rigorous book defending the thesis "If you may do it for free, you may do it for money." In it, they attack the underlying revulsion and biases against markets held by critics. The authors clarify the debate (hint: it's not about business ethics and it's not about regulation), rooting out fallacies and red herrings to get down to the actual claims of anti-commodification critics. Yet, what makes the book both powerful and useful is the clear, concise, and fair manner in which they describe their opponents' arguments. Multiple angles are addressed and core critical arguments are broken down, making the authors' logic and position all the more compelling and--after the irrelevant debris mentioned above is cleared away--somewhat obvious. Bolstering the authors' arguments is an immense amount of relevant social science. Whenever empirical claims are made (by either Brennan and Jaworski or market critics), evidence from studies in psychology, sociology, economics, and anthropology is presented and explained. Finally, the book provides a possible way in which to influence both liberals and conservatives to embrace policies that lead to more economic freedom.

Should be read by both friends and foes of the market.

like most I know precious little of academic philosophy

Admittedly, like most I know precious little of academic philosophy. Most of the oeuvre is written in stilted language hellbent on purposeful obfuscation, much like this sentence! What will prove to be an enduring virtue of the work is that it dispenses with academic verbiage and pretense. The work is written in a plainspoken tone, while managing not to not speak down the reader. In the long view the accessible writing style and the provocative claims made (and backed) will resonate with future generation of students.

The book essentially argues that if one removes from markets items that should be owned by no one, like nuclear weaponry, the objections to the sale of any given item--if it can be gifted away--ought to be eligible for purchase. The chapter on "semiotic" objections hammers this argument home. The book does not shrink from addressing a handful of the most resolute arguments against markets. The authors name names and rebut criticisms.

What adds immensely to the readability factor is the use of clarifying real world examples throughout. The social construction of markets in helping us determine the meaning of particular goods--sales of organs or adoption rights--is relevant to sociological discourse. Although it will earn a chilly reception there. Nevertheless, the authors' deft use of empirical evidence to overturn "sacred truths" captures the excitement that grows with a data driven philosophy. The examples they chose and various markets defended (voting markets!) ought to attract a well deserved reaction in the intellectual market.
