About the Author
ERIC ARTHUR BLAIR (19031950), better known by his pen name George Orwell, was an English author and journalist whose best-known works include the dystopian novel 1984 and the satirical novella Animal Farm. He is consistently ranked among the best English writers of the 20th century, and his writing has had a huge, lasting influence on contemporary culture. Several of his coined words have since entered the English language, and the word "Orwellian" is now used to describe totalitarian or authoritarian social practices.

Why I Write

From a very early age, perhaps the age of five or six, I knew that when I grew up I should be a writer. Between the ages of about seventeen and twenty-four I tried to abandon this idea, but I did so with the consciousness that I was outraging my true nature and that sooner or later I should have to settle down and write books.

I was the middle child of three, but there was a gap of five years on either side, and I barely saw my father before I was eight. For this and other reasons I was somewhat lonely, and I soon developed disagreeable mannerisms which made me unpopular throughout my schooldays. I had the lonely child's habit of making up stories and holding conversations with imaginary persons, and I think from the very start my literary ambitions were mixed up with the feeling of being isolated and undervalued. I knew that I had a facility with words and a power of facing unpleasant facts, and I felt that this created a sort of private world in which I could get my own back for my failure in everyday life. Nevertheless the volume of serious - i.e. seriously intended - writing which I produced all through my childhood and boyhood would not amount to half a dozen pages. I wrote my first poem at the age of four or five, my mother taking it down to dictation.

Great short collection of essays

Why I Write is a collection of four pieces by one of the best writers of the twentieth century. George Orwell is best known for his political fables Animal Farm and 1984, but was also a prolific essayist and author of numerous short stories, many of them based on his own experiences in British-controlled Burma. This books includes three essays--"Why I Write", "The Lion and the Unicorn", and "Politics and the English Language"--and the short story "A Hanging."

"Why I Write" offers the reader a look into one great writer's motivations for writing, as Orwell lays out the only real reasons anyone writes. "The Lion and the Unicorn" is fascinating, not only for its often humorous descriptions of the British national character, but for the political ideas expressed in it and the knowledge, made clear by Orwell at the beginning, that this was written in the midst of the Blitz. "Politics and the English Language" is a brief guide to the fatal flaws of modern writing--all of which have lasted beyond Orwell--and how to mend them. "A Hanging" is reminiscent of another of Orwell's famous short stories, "Shooting the Elephant," as it describes an otherwise mundane action in ominous, metaphoric terms.

While hardly exhaustive, this collection of Orwell's essays is a good introduction to Orwell, his writings, and his political views. Makes very good reading for a trip, which is where I read it.

In evaluating "Why I write?," I am not evaluating Orwell: he is - in my opinion - beyond evaluation. Brilliant, unorthodox, humanistically transparent - he is a model of existential integrity. In evaluating "Why I write?" I am offering an evaluation of this particular compilation of essays. I am trying to answer the question of "Why should I buy the 'Why I write?'"

This particular compilation of Orwell's essays consists of "Why I write?," The Lion and the Unicorn," "A Hanging," and "Politics and the English Language." As you might have already gleaned from you search, the books of Orwell's essays are all over the market place. This one - consisting of four iconic essays - is a great primer.

The "Why I write?" humbles with introspection and humanistic self-acceptance. "The Lion and the Unicorn" showcases Orwell's keen journalism and the capacity to be on the outside of the phenomenon in question, even when that phenomenon is his own culture. "A Hanging" is a normalizing glimpse into how we deal with our own mortality superimposed onto a social statement against capital punishment. And the "Politics and the English Language" is a brilliant examination of the human consciousness, a study of the interplay of thought and language, an anti-dote to propoganda, a treasure trove of linguistic hypotheses, and, if nothing else, a useful commentary on the rationale behind the "1984" Newspeak and Doublethink.

As such, this particular collection of Orwell's essays reveals the breadth of his thematic spectrum - without the biographical weight of more exhaustive essay compilations.

Don't buy the Kindle version by Crabbit House

Well, there was Our Man eager to read the four essays that are mentioned in the product description. But lo and behold when you buy the Kindle edition by Crabbit House for a steal at under $2.00, it only includes the one 15-screen essay, Why I Write, which is freely available on Google. The other three essays, that are in the description, are not included in the collection. A steal all right, but not the good kind.

For the next twenty-five years she worked as a designer and sketch artist before starting her own company with her husband Art Ortenberg. Liz Claiborne, Inc. was an immediate success, and was by 1981 a Fortune 500 company with $1.2 billion in sales.

In this book Art Ortenberg does not so much celebrate Liz Claiborne the designer and entrepreneur, but rather Liz the woman. "Liz left us more than her work," he concludes, "perhaps more than the consequences of her work; she left us herself. The making of that self, and the good she did for others, is the story I tell."

Born to privilege in 1929 Brussels (her family moved to America at the start of WWII), Claiborne learned responsibility from her parents and developed a powerful sense of ambition, allowing her to navigate the turbulent world of fashion; after decades of work, she would reach her pinnacle of international popularity in the logo-obsessed 1980s. While the first half of Ortenberg's paean makes an able account of the duo's workaday life, the second half is dominated by Claiborne's slow, painful struggle with ovarian cancer, an exhaustive (and exhausting) account of horrors suffered that could discourage all but the most committed readers. Liz Claiborne...a woman with a great smile

Anyone and everyone in the fashion industry is familiar with Liz Claiborne fashion. Though are you familiar with the woman who created this successful fashion empire? Unless you were one of the few lucky ones who got to work with Liz then you don't really know who Liz is and was.

Liz Claiborne grew up always knowing exactly what she wanted to be...a fashion designer. She had a great fashion sense. In 1976, Liz started Liz Claiborne Inc. Sadly on June 26, 2007, Liz passed way from cancer. Even up to the very end, Liz was still smiling and a fighter.

In Liz Claiborne, the Legend, the Woman, author, business partner and Liz's husband, Art Ortenberg shares with readers just who Liz really was...a nice person, wife and entrepreneur with great smile and warm heart.

This book truly was a celebration of a Liz Claiborne. She was loved by many people The pictures inserted through out this book were a nice bonus. If you are looking to read this book expecting a memoir of Liz Claiborne and how she started out in the business and maybe learn a couple of interesting facts, then this may not be the book for you. The book rambles a lot,and is obviously written in grief. i was surprised to see that they met while married to others and seemed proud of it.

The Righteous Reign of a Good God

Mark Craig takes a diplomatically middle-of-the-road stance on the Historical Jesus debate that has been raging among scholars for the last couple of decades. Like John Dominic Crossan, Craig may appear radical at first, in his fastidiously meticulous unpacking of scriptural and apocryphal literature, but his conclusions are on the conservative side--that there WAS a rural rabbi whose teachings reached out to an unwashed unsung rabble, whose message was about social justice and love, but that reconstructing him as a historical entity is impossible because of the multiple Judaic, Greek, and Roman layers of metaphysical mutation that muddy the waters. According to Craig, the original Jesus was not likely to have claimed Messianic or divine status. He simply promulgated a utopian Judaic vision of the righteous reign of a good God which ended up having a remarkable resonance with the poor and powerless. Craig is in alignment with the Jesus Seminar in this. Ultimately, Craig is more concerned with the message rather than the messenger, in that he believes, like Joseph Campbell, that ALL religion is allegorical instead of literal, and one can only judge a belief by the behavior that results from it, not the idiosyncratic ideology it espouses.

This book makes for an interesting read. Although, I'd come across some of the insights previously, I was exposed to new ones as well. Mark Craig does a remarkable job of synthesising an eclectic range of scholarly perspectives into a response to the question within the title.

About the Author
�Rebecca Gilman’s plays include Dollhouse, Spinning into Butter, Boy Gets Girl, Blue Surge, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, and The Glory of Living. Her plays have been produced at the Goodman Theatre, the Royal Court Theatre, Lincoln Center Theater, Joseph Papp’s Public Theater, Manhattan Theatre Club, and Manhattan Class Company Theater. Among other honors and awards, she is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, and her play The Glory of Living was a finalist for the 2001 Pulitzer Prize. Gilman is an assistant professor of playwriting and screenwriting in the MFA program at Northwestern University.

The seven day sleep system

This does work and I am amazed. I really did not believe that is would work but it does. I have been working on third shift for almost ten years straight and I have not had a decent nights sleep as a fact I can only sleep about three hours maybe four hours if I am lucky. I even have to use an oxygen machine while I sleep but that is changing for me with is system. I say try it out for yourself and see what it can do for you.

Excellent book on how to cure sleeplessness. Straight to the point, with easy illustrations, Mudras and Ajurvedic healing herbs. I love this book, just like all the other books i did read by Mr. Advait. He knows his Mudras, Healing herbs and he truly wants to help you to get better and healtier. A new framework to question what values truly matter and how to build empowering systems that lift you up not limit you.

I read this book via another website and wanted to share my thoughts with Amazon.

When we look at the average highly successful athlete, entrepreneur or writer we often think that they embody traits that we can somehow never access. They have skills that we cannot even begin to comprehend. Unfortunately this is a fiction, and even worse yet - a very limiting one. Amazing things can come from small simple daily incremental steps and the foundation for that is a mind that supports and nourishes your growth. This is exactly what Scott Allan has produced in this book - a thoughtful reflection of the mental process.

He has broken down this process into various steps.

1. Importance of thinking for yourself over others.
2. Controlling fear
3. Mastering your circumstances.

I don't want to give away too much with each chapter but each one is presented with a ton of actionable content and key takeaway points which rehash the main chapter focus. There are a lot of great resources that I had never heard of, particularly the organizational techniques.

What you will get with this book is - an actionable framework for building a reality that allows you to focus and build a new you.

Not a difficult read and full of great actionable content. Recommended.

This book challenges you to UP LEVEL and fire up your thinking for success

There are some brilliant mind hacks in here that will boost your mental resilience, have you SMASHING through FEAR, and empower and hardwire your thoughts for success. The Author shows you how important a positive mental attitude is for creativity which is the powerhouse for generating ideas. You are also shown HOW to create the right environment and conditions so you become an idea machine, and are able to have the confidence to monetise and create multiple income streams from them. A really good read!

The third one I've read, this is perhaps Scott's most practical book yet. We've all heard of the power of positive thinking, this book shows you in simple and easy to implement steps how it works. Scott shares many useful techniques that help you clarify your thinking and make your brain work for you. Situation simulation is one of those techniques and is particularly effective in stress and anger prevention.
When you know how to empower your thoughts, there is so much you can do, achieving financial success just one of them.
