About the Author
Linnea Dayton is a contributing editor to Step-By-Step Electronic Design, a full-color monthly newsletter for graphic designers and illustrators, which she edited for the first five years of its existence. Formerly managing editor of Verbum magazine, she is co-author of the Verbum book series (PostScript Illustration, Electronic Page Design, Digital Painting, Scanned Imagery, and Digital Typography) as well as The Desktop Color Book, The Photo CD Book, The Photoshop Wow! Book (Mac and Windows editions for Photoshop 2.5), Aldus PageMaker: A Visual Guide for the Mac, and Adobe Illustrator: A Visual Guide for the Mac. Jack Davis is the principal of JHDavis Design and art director of Presto Studios. He founded the Computer Graphics program at Platt College in San Diego, CA. Not recommended for Photoshop beginners

I purchased this book several months ago, having no experience in Photoshop. From the first I found the book overwhelming and confusing. Maybe it's my style of learning, as I was expecting a more linear style. Something like, "Okay, here's what you need to know to get started" and "Now that you know this, here's how you do that."
But this book, to me, is needlessly complicated. While it's excellent for detailed descriptions, I wouldn't recommend it for beginners. I found myself reading and re-reading descriptions and information, breaking out the highligher pen, trying to glean the basics from pages and pages of details that were, for a beginner like me, irrelevant. I say irrelevant because I was given information on things I hadn't learned yet.
I wound up purchasing other resources to learn Photoshop. Now that I have a basic understanding of the software, this book is a little more useful, though still too complicated for my taste.

LOVE these old instructional titles

I have had PS (2.5) since March 1994 when I got my first Apple and Epson scanner. I have upgraded PS every year and now have the latest and greatest CS5. I am always overwhelmed with PS features so I don't even come close to unleashing the full power of the program. I ran across a copy of this book at a bookstore recently and was astonished at how much information was so very useful for me. I am just a casual at home user but I aim for the best results with my Nikon photography. This book explains things simply when many of the powerful and complex features were just emerging. It is easier to follow the instructions and exemplars and to apply the features from a more basic time. While some of the steps have been streamlined the basic process remains the same and when I extrapolate this "old" info onto the newest app features suddenly the dawn comes. Miracles happen and I "get it"! And of course I ordered this from Amazon and it arrived in pristine condition from the seller. I am grateful to have access to this valuable and useful guidance. Perhaps one day in a galaxy far far away I will be able to approach Photoshop with supreme confidence and competence.

Lots of fun

This is a virtual candy store for a Photoshop enthusiast, and one of my two favorite Photoshop books. The effects are fun and occassionally challenging. If you work through a decent portion of this book you will learn the program. Since most of the examples will work just fine in Photoshop 7, I probably will skip the next edition unless it has a lot of new material. If you know the basics of Photoshop and want to go to the next level this is a good place to start.
