About the Author
Harriet Isecke, MA and M. Ed., has served for over 35 years as a teacher, literacy coach, and district administrator and is the recipient of several local and state education awards. Her published works include numerous children's picture books, reader's theater plays, primary source guides for students, and differentiated instructional materials for teachers. Harriet speaks at state, national, and international conferences and provides workshops for K-12 educators.

Enduring Understanding for Educators

The main focus of this book is to help teachers design lessons so that students achieve enduring understandings. If teachers follow Isecke's book/guide, they, too, will be left with an enduring understanding of backwards planning or understanding by design. The author has written a practical, teacher friendly book that includes personal experiences as well as specific examples for designing units and lessons in a variety of content areas and at different grade levels. She has broken down difficult material into step by step procedures that guide teachers through an understanding of planning and implementing an effective instructional program.
A perfect book for Professional Learning Community study and for mentoring new teachers.

Understanding by Design Made Easy

This book takes the mystery out of Understanding by Design (UBD). It helps teachers understand why it is better to start with a big idea and then build the road map to get there. The author writing is very approachable and it is written though a teacher's eyes. This book would be a great for a book study,the questions through out the book can be used to stimulate discussion. I think this is the best book I've ever read on UBD.

Will use this book for professional development.

Harriet Isecke has created a guidebook to UbD that does what Einstein recommends: she makes the concepts and procedures simpler, but not simplistic. She lays the results of research on learning at our fingertips, and puts it all together in a coherent whole. From assessments and rubrics to unit design and identifying big ideas, she clarifies, organizes, and explains in a sequenced process. Her graphic organizers cement the learnings for thoughtful application. I am buying this book for all 75 teachers and the workshop facilitators in our summer institute in teaching math and science. The STEM faculty will benefit greatly from reading and using this book. Bravo, Harriet!
