Over the past 20 years, the biomedical research community has been delivering hundreds of breakthroughs expected to extend human lifespan beyond thresholds imaginable today. However, much of this research has not yet been adopted into clinical practice, nor has it been widely publicized. Biomedicine will transform our society forever by allowing people to live longer and to continue working and contributing financially to the economy longer, rather than entering into retirement and draining the economy through pensions and senior healthcare. Old age will become a concept of the past, breakthroughs in regenerative medicine will continue, and an unprecedented boom to the global economy, with an influx of older able-bodied workers and consumers, will be a reality. A leading expert in aging research, author Alex Zhavoronkov provides a helicopter view on the progress science has already made, from repairing tissue damage to growing functional organs from a single cell, and illuminates the possibilities that the scientific and medical community will soon make into realities. The Ageless Generation is an engaging work that causes us to rethink our ideas of age and ability in the modern world.

Review
“The devastating impact of population aging in the decades to come is becoming like the proverbial weather: everyone is talking about it but no one is doing anything about it. Zhavoronkov starkly sets out the nature and trajectory of this crisis - and then he elaborates what few others have yet described, and no one so expertly: the unique solution to it, namely the development of comprehensive rejuvenation medicine that will restore and maintain the health of the elderly so that they can continue to contribute wealth to society. This book has the potential to define medium-term economic and social policy for the entire industrialized world.” ―Aubrey de Grey, Ph.D., Chief Science Officer, SENS Research Foundation
“Alex Zhavoronkov claims that we do not have to age the way all other generations did. Or... possibly... at all? Controversial and assertive, he lays out the case for expanding research into what makes all human beings sink into twilight before a century of life. Shall we adjust social policies for an era of spry oldsters, or even semi-immortals? These matters will roil our arguments for the next five decades. The Ageless Generation presents one side with knowledge and verve.” ―David Brin, bestselling author of Kiln People, Foundation’s Triumph, and many others
“The Ageless Generation addresses the greatest socio-political/scientific challenge of our time. It is provocative, fast paced, and hard to put down. This book should stimulate a lot of thought and hopefully some constructive responses both scientific and in the health care system.” ―Charles Cantor, Chief Scientific Officer, Sequenom, Inc., and Professor Emeritus, Boston University
“Aging is getting interesting! Zhavoronkov provides a concise but thorough view of aging from changing global demographics to the latest research. Importantly, he outlines a point-by-point plan centered around aging research that if realized could solve the aging population problem, create major economic benefits and enhance dramatically the quality of life for elders. Everyone should take heed. The choices we make now will impact us all in the near future.” ―Brian Kennedy, Ph.D., President and CEO, Buck Institute for Research on Aging
“The research of Alex Zhavoronkov paints a picture of frightening reality: that our children might just live to 130. The financial and economic consequences of this cry out for more urgent attention from all sides of society. A huge physchological readjustment in our attitude towards retirement, as we know it, is required for us to start to cope with this new future.” ―Hugh Gallagher, Chairman, International Employee Benefits Association

Not quite what I was expecting
By John Schmelzle
When I purchased this book I was hoping to read about Advances in Biomedicine. Obviously, I did not get what I hoped for. This book spent very little time on Advances in Biomedicine, but rather talked mostly about the economic impact of these advances. It is not really a science book at all. It is more of a book on the social sciences. I was also not expecting it to be more geared to persuade the reader to the author's opinion as opposed to being an informative book. I will clarify this below be describing each section of the book:
Part One, The Era of Longer Lifespans: The author tells us here of his intentions for writing this book which are to convince the reader of the need for fundamental changes in government policy regarding entitlement programs and the need to reform medical research spending. He talks at great length of the problems with programs like Medicare and social security as well as their impending bankruptcy. There was very little science in this section at all.
Part Two, Understanding Aging: It was here that I expected to read about Advances in Biomedicine. This part starting out discussing what aging is and its Biologic causes. It further talked about the economic need to extend Work Span (the amount of time people can work in their lives) to a point well past the age of 65. The author does a very good job laying down the ground work for his discussion on Biomedicine, which he finally addresses in the last chapter of this section. However, he only spends about 20 pages on this topic, only really covering it at a very high level.
Part Three, The Need to Reform Medical Research: This section was interesting, however, it was again more about the economic reasons that this reform needs to take place. He brings up some very good point to consider.
Part Four, The Retirement Culture: I found this section to not really be relevant to the author's intention of the book or its stated title. This seemed like more of a self help section, advertising the reading of what he should do, rather than changes that effect the population as a whole. I did not find this section interesting at all.
Based on the title of the book, its description, and the reviews, I expected this book to be a lot more science oriented. If you want to discuss "How Advances in Biomedicine Will Transform the Global Economy" you really need to talk more about the advances in biomedicine that you are referring to. That being said, the book was fairly well written and if your interests are in the economics of aging, it might be worth a read.

A DISCUSSION WHICH MUST TAKE PLACE (SOON!!!)
By Robert Steven Thomas
There are two major, unstoppable-forces presently taking place in all advanced societies. Together, they are leading us toward a potential human disaster of unprecedented proportion. We each ignore them at our own peril. They are: 1) Remarkable new medical technology which is dramatically increasing the lifespan of the average human and 2) Society's failure to recognize the impending cost and take the necessary political action to prepare for the sociological and life-changing events which will be economically required. This book deals with these two paradigm-shifting forces and their potential ruination (without action) in simple, elegant, well-worded terms and analogies. Turn off your TV and order this book. Read it ... then give it to a neighbor or friend. Talk. Spread the word. Forewarned is forearmed.

Great work encouraging anti-aging research
By A Customer
The Ageless Generation is an excellent socioeconomic analysis of the aging crisis looming in the changing demographics of the world's major economies, urging the general public and scientific community to commit funds and research specifically dedicated to anti-aging science.
Here is a limited overview:
Zhavoronkov forecasts the cumulative spending on Medicare and Social Security that threatens the solvency of the United States (and thereby the financial stability of the world), explaining that this is in fact the major barrier to the prosperity of anti-aging research. He gives a quick summary of major developments in regenerative medicine, biogerontology, et cetera demonstrating their immediate potential to make humans live longer and more productive lives. His proposed solution to avoid this financial collapse is to reform medical research to formally undertake comprehensive anti-aging research rather than to continue funding bureaucratic waste and spectacularly expensive palliative care for the terminally ill. He also argues for cultural change in retirement culture (facilitated by simple anti-aging techniques) to make the senior a productive member of society.
This is an important book. Anti-aging research must lose its taboo and receive coordinated, serious intellectual effort and financial support. To re-iterate by analogy, here is a historical comparison mentioned in the book:
Ignaz Semmelweis was a Hungarian / German physician, a pioneer in the nineteenth century in antiseptic procedures, advocated that hospital staff wash their hands and clothing to prevent infection, childbed fever in particular. Despite the data he collected showing a tremendous drop in mortality rate, his opinion was mostly rejected by the contemporary medical community, precipitating in him a mental deterioration that drove him into an insane asylum.
Treatment of infectious disease has been the primary contribution to the increased life expectancy we enjoy today, which at the beginning of the last century was in the 30s.
