About the Author
John C. Russ is a professor in the Materials Science and Engineering Department at North Carolina State University. Before beginning his teaching career, Dr. Russ worked at Bethlehem Steel Co. Research Labs in alloy development, led the applications laboratories for Japan Electron Optics Laboratories, and served as Senior Vice President of Edax International (manufacturer of X-ray analytical equipment). He has also worked as the Director of Research for Rank Taylor Hobson (worldwide leader in precision metrology instrumentation). Dr. Russ' research programs involve several private, commercial, and government agency sponsors. The topics of these research efforts include 3-D X-ray and neutron tomography of microstructure, metrology of microelectronics devices, surface roughness in machined and worn materials, and the use of multimedia in undergraduate introductory courses in materials science. While Dr. Russ' background is in physics and materials, he has been involved in many interdisciplinary studies in the life sciences, textiles, geology, and archeology.

This is a classic text book in stereology. Amazing that it was written in 1986, when there was hardly any computer image analysis available for the average private person.
