Amazon.com Review
Arthur Miller's 1949 Death of a Salesman has sold 11 million copies, and Willy Loman didn't make all those sales on a smile and a shoeshine. This play is the genuine article--it's got the goods on the human condition, all packed into a day in the life of one self-deluded, self-promoting, self-defeating soul. It's a sturdy bridge between kitchen-sink realism and spectral abstraction, the facts of particular hard times and universal themes. As Christopher Bigsby's mildly interesting afterword in this 50th-anniversary edition points out (as does Miller in his memoir, Timebends), Willy is closely based on the playwright's sad, absurd salesman uncle, Manny. But of course Miller made Manny into Everyman, and gave him the name of the crime commissioner Lohmann in Fritz Lang's angst-ridden 1932 Nazi parable, The Testament of Dr. Mabuse.

The tragedy of Loman the all-American dreamer and loser works eternally, on the page as on the stage. A lot of plays made history around 1949, but none have stepped out of history into the classic canon as Salesman has. Great as it was, Tennessee Williams's work can't be revived as vividly as this play still is, all over the world. (This edition has edifying pictures of Lee J. Cobb's 1949 and Brian Dennehy's 1999 performances.) It connects Aristotle, The Great Gatsby, On the Waterfront, David Mamet, and the archetypal American movie antihero. It even transcends its author's tragic flaw of pious preachiness (which undoes his snoozy The Crucible, unfortunately his most-produced play).

No doubt you've seen Willy Loman's story at least once. It's still worth reading. --Tim Appelo

From Library Journal
This 50th-anniversary edition of Miller's masterpiece, which certainly is a contender for the finest American drama of the 20th century, includes the full text of the play, a chronology of its productions, photos from various stagings including the current Broadway revival, and a new preface by Miller himself, all in a quality hardcover for a reasonable price. Bravo, Penguin.

Death of a Salesman (micro-review)
By lowbudgetfun
When Willy Loman says, “Work a lifetime to pay off a house. You finally own it, and there’s nobody to live in it.” he’s laying bare the hollowness of American capitialism. Work a job you don’t like, to buy stuff you don’t need, and end up “a hard-working drummer who landed in the ash can like all the rest of them!” Arthur Miller’s masterpiece Death of Salesman was first performed in 1949, but it feels vital to me today, as I grapple to redefine my definition of success in 2017 and beyond.

(The play itself is one of my favorite pieces of writing in any form
By x
This about a particular edition of Death of a Salesman -- the Penguin Plays hardcover version. (The play itself is one of my favorite pieces of writing in any form, which is why I was buying the hardcover version.)

This edition is disappointing. It seems like a paperback version -- and a cheap one, at that -- was simply inserted into hardcover. The paper is flimsy, the printing isn't particularly legible or aesthetically pleasing, and even the size of the paper somehow seems to small for the size of the cover.

only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 is that it's still a great play.

Just don't buy this version. (The Penguin Classics version, in paperback, is superior, for example.)

Tells the truth about the American Dream
By HH
Any thoughtful, bookish Americans who haven't read "Death of a Salesman" have done themselves a cultural disservice of the first order. While there are many things that make "Death of a Salesman" one of the greatest plays of the 20th century, to this reviewer's mind the play's many themes are the key. One of the play's main themes is reality vs. illusion. "Death of a Salesman" makes frequent use of flashbacks to present Willy’s memory during the reality. The illusion not only suggests the past, but also presents the lost pastoral life. Willy has dreamed of success his whole life and makes up lies about his and Biff’s success. The more he indulges in the illusion, the harder it is for him to face reality. Biff is the only one who realizes that the whole family lived in the lies and tries to face the truth. The American Dream is the other main theme of the play, but everyone in the play has their own way to describe their American Dreams, Biff especially. Willy dreams of being a successful salesman like Dave Singleton, somebody who has both wealth and freedom. Willy believes that the key to success is being well-liked, and his frequent flashbacks show that he measures happiness in terms of wealth and popularity. Society tries to teach that if people are rich and well-liked, they will be happy. Because of this, Willy thought that money would make him happy. He never bothered to try to be happy with what he has. Willy also believes that to attain success, one must have a good personality. He believes that salesmanship is based on ‘sterling traits of character’ and ‘a pleasing personality.’ But Willy does not have the requisite sterling traits of character; people simply do not like him as much as he thinks is necessary for success.

Uncle Ben represents the ideal of American Dream. He thinks that the American Dream is to catch opportunity, to conquer nature, and to gain a fortune. He says “Why, boys, when I was seventeen I walked into the jungle, and when I was twenty-one I walked out. (He laughs.) And by God I was rich.” Ben symbolizes another kind of successful American Dreams for Willy. After seeing his father’s real identity, Biff does not follow his father’s “dream” because he knows that Willy does see his future but in a blind way. Meaning that he can and cannot see at the same time, since his way of seeing or visualizing the future is completely wrong. Biff has a dream to get outside, to farm, and work hard with his own hands, but his father prevents him from pursuing his dream. Biff realizes his father’s dream is “wrong” during his father's funeral.

Another thing that is apparent from the "Death of a Salesman" is the hard work and dedication of Charley and Bernard. Willy criticizes Charley and Bernard throughout the play, but it is not because he hates them. Rather, it appears that Willy is jealous of the successes they've enjoyed, which is outside his standards. The models of business success provided in the play all argue against Willy’s "personality theory." One is Charley, Willy’s neighbor and apparently only friend. Charley has no time for Willy’s theories of business, but he provides for his family and is in a position to offer Willy a do-nothing job to keep him bringing home a salary.

"Death of a Salesman" will especially hit home with male readers who feel they had a difficult time in life pleasing their fathers. In this connection, I recommend that readers of "Death" watch the spectacular 1985 film version starring Dustin Hoffman as Willy and John Malkovich as Biff. Hoffman and Malkovich perfectly portray the sadness of failed hope of a father for his son and failed love of a son for his father.

First, Learn to Practice, by Tom Heany

Tom Heany has been involved with music his whole life, as a student, a teacher, a player, a writer and, yes, a practicer - for 13,000 hours, give or take a few. For 16 years he was the Director of Programming for the National Music Foundation, where he developed and ran the American Music Education Initiative and the Berkshire Music Festival. As a contributing editor for the National Guitar Workshop, he wrote about musical subjects ranging from the Grammy Awards to Tuvan throatsinging. For WorkshopLive, NGW's online learning platform, he interviewed guitar, bass and piano teachers about their views on practicing, performing and playing. He has created content for online courses in guitar instruction, folk music, bluegrass and country music, and advised the Boy Scouts of America on the requirements for the Music Merit Badge. Tom has also taught guitar, performed in the rockabilly band Real Gone, arranged the music of George Gershwin and Duke Ellington for solo acoustic guitar and written dozens of songs. First, Learn to Practice is a book about how to practice a musical instrument - any musical instrument. It's suitable for all musicians - professional, amateur, student or beginner. Whether you play in a concert hall or your own basement, First, Learn to Practice can show you how to get the most pleasure, and the most progress, out of your practice time. "Certainly part of the problem in learning how to play an instrument is the way an individual approaches practicing. One must be committed to spending lots of time on eye, ear, and hand coordination; learning how to listen; learning how to sight-read; and, having fun during those many hours of conquering notes on and off the page. But, how many "students" really know how to practice in the first place? The answers can be found in Tom Heany's new book First, Learn to Practice. It is structured in a way that the novice musician who is serious about learning to play can make substantial progress and enjoy the art of practicing while engaged in making music. This very basic text is a must have for all music makers who want to build their mental and physical attitudes toward great practice sessions." ~ Dr. Willie Hill, Director of the Fine Arts Center, the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. "Tom Heany has developed an approach to mastering a musical instrument that is both simple and effective. First Learn to Practice is a must for anyone who is serious about learning to play." ~ David Smolover, Founder of National Guitar Workshop and WorkshopLive

How to get to Carnegie ...no, that joke is way too old.
By Vermont Bookman
An invaluable book for all skill levels and any instrument. I only wish I had read this book before I settled into all of my bad practicing habits. Written simply and with humor, this is a terrific book that will turn your head around about practicing as it did mine. Take the drudgery out of your practice routines and make them fun and effective. If you apply the lessons served up here, you will become a better musician, guaranteed. If guitar is your instrument of choice, this book makes the perfect practical companion to the classic Zen Guitar by Phillip Suto.

Great Book!
By Blaine T. Jones
This book was recommended on a guitar forum, so I gave it a look. I was a bit hesitant at first - with this many glowing reviews I've learned to be skeptical as many authors will plant 5 star reviews of their own book. I'm confident that's not the case here.

This is a good, easy read full of invaluable advice and tips to make your guitar practice more productive. While reading the book, I was constantly thinking to myself that these are really common-sense ideas to approach practice, yet I wasn't implementing any of this advice in my routine. My method of practicing has often been to turn the TV on and noodle away on the guitar. It was clear from the author's advice that I've been doing it wrong the whole time.

I'm the kind of the guy that doesn't believe anything anyone tells me without good reason and that's the great thing about this book. The author doesn't just say, "Do it this way," with no explanation. He says "Do it this way, and here's why..."

While there are many things to take away from this book, my biggest so far is to approach practice with a plan. Without a plan, you have no goals. And without goals, you're unlikely to achieve anything.

Now I'm confident that I can plan my practice more effectively and get a whole lot more out of it and achieve my goals.

short, but very sweet
By Amazon Customer
I'm learning to play a musical instrument as an adult beginner and this book has made an extraordinary difference to the quality and effectiveness of my practice sessions. Most of what he says I knew, but knowing it and doing it are two different things. His description of the process and the nuts and bolts of learning music were revelatory.

About the Author
ERIC ARTHUR BLAIR (19031950), better known by his pen name George Orwell, was an English author and journalist whose best-known works include the dystopian novel 1984 and the satirical novella Animal Farm. He is consistently ranked among the best English writers of the 20th century, and his writing has had a huge, lasting influence on contemporary culture. Why I Write

From a very early age, perhaps the age of five or six, I knew that when I grew up I should be a writer. Between the ages of about seventeen and twenty-four I tried to abandon this idea, but I did so with the consciousness that I was outraging my true nature and that sooner or later I should have to settle down and write books.

I was the middle child of three, but there was a gap of five years on either side, and I barely saw my father before I was eight. For this and other reasons I was somewhat lonely, and I soon developed disagreeable mannerisms which made me unpopular throughout my schooldays. I had the lonely child's habit of making up stories and holding conversations with imaginary persons, and I think from the very start my literary ambitions were mixed up with the feeling of being isolated and undervalued. I knew that I had a facility with words and a power of facing unpleasant facts, and I felt that this created a sort of private world in which I could get my own back for my failure in everyday life. Nevertheless the volume of serious - i.e. seriously intended - writing which I produced all through my childhood and boyhood would not amount to half a dozen pages. I wrote my first poem at the age of four or five, my mother taking it down to dictation.

Great short collection of essays
By Jordan M. Poss
Why I Write is a collection of four pieces by one of the best writers of the twentieth century. George Orwell is best known for his political fables Animal Farm and 1984, but was also a prolific essayist and author of numerous short stories, many of them based on his own experiences in British-controlled Burma. This books includes three essays--"Why I Write", "The Lion and the Unicorn", and "Politics and the English Language"--and the short story "A Hanging."

"Why I Write" offers the reader a look into one great writer's motivations for writing, as Orwell lays out the only real reasons anyone writes. "The Lion and the Unicorn" is fascinating, not only for its often humorous descriptions of the British national character, but for the political ideas expressed in it and the knowledge, made clear by Orwell at the beginning, that this was written in the midst of the Blitz. "Politics and the English Language" is a brief guide to the fatal flaws of modern writing--all of which have lasted beyond Orwell--and how to mend them. "A Hanging" is reminiscent of another of Orwell's famous short stories, "Shooting the Elephant," as it describes an otherwise mundane action in ominous, metaphoric terms.

While hardly exhaustive, this collection of Orwell's essays is a good introduction to Orwell, his writings, and his political views. Makes very good reading for a trip, which is where I read it.

Highly recommended.

Question is: Why Should I Buy this particular "Why I write?" Compilation?
By Pavel Somov, Ph.D., author of "Lotus Effect," "Present Perfect," & "Eating the Moment"
In evaluating "Why I write?," I am not evaluating Orwell: he is - in my opinion - beyond evaluation. Brilliant, unorthodox, humanistically transparent - he is a model of existential integrity. In evaluating "Why I write?" I am offering an evaluation of this particular compilation of essays. I am trying to answer the question of "Why should I buy the 'Why I write?'"

This particular compilation of Orwell's essays consists of "Why I write?," The Lion and the Unicorn," "A Hanging," and "Politics and the English Language." As you might have already gleaned from you search, the books of Orwell's essays are all over the market place. This one - consisting of four iconic essays - is a great primer.

The "Why I write?" humbles with introspection and humanistic self-acceptance. "The Lion and the Unicorn" showcases Orwell's keen journalism and the capacity to be on the outside of the phenomenon in question, even when that phenomenon is his own culture. "A Hanging" is a normalizing glimpse into how we deal with our own mortality superimposed onto a social statement against capital punishment. And the "Politics and the English Language" is a brilliant examination of the human consciousness, a study of the interplay of thought and language, an anti-dote to propoganda, a treasure trove of linguistic hypotheses, and, if nothing else, a useful commentary on the rationale behind the "1984" Newspeak and Doublethink.

As such, this particular collection of Orwell's essays reveals the breadth of his thematic spectrum - without the biographical weight of more exhaustive essay compilations.

Don't buy the Kindle version by Crabbit House
By Patrick Sherriff
Well, there was Our Man eager to read the four essays that are mentioned in the product description. But lo and behold when you buy the Kindle edition by Crabbit House for a steal at under $2.00, it only includes the one 15-screen essay, Why I Write, which is freely available on Google. The other three essays, that are in the description, are not included in the collection. A steal all right, but not the good kind.

Liz Claiborne: The Legend, The Woman, by Art Ortenberg

To have lived a joyful life and to have departed that life a victim of a vicious cancer is, in brief, the story of Liz Claiborne's life. But the story is much more than that. Born in Brussels in 1929, the third and last child of a highborn American banker and his delicate, beautiful wife, she was born privileged and taught that privilege incurs responsibilities. She lived out her early years untouched by life and death during the ominous 1930s, until the ominous became the real and the family fled to America. Inheriting her father's love of paintings and museums and her mother's love of costumes and clothing, Liz early on discovered "the beauty of everyday things," and at the age of twenty won the Grand Award in the Harper's Junior Bazaar Design Contest, which earned her a trip to Paris to work for ten days with famed couturier Jacques Heim. For the next twenty-five years she worked as a designer and sketch artist before starting her own company with her husband Art Ortenberg. Liz Claiborne, Inc. was an immediate success, and was by 1981 a Fortune 500 company with $1.2 billion in sales.

In this book Art Ortenberg does not so much celebrate Liz Claiborne the designer and entrepreneur, but rather Liz the woman. "Liz left us more than her work," he concludes, "perhaps more than the consequences of her work; she left us herself. The making of that self, and the good she did for others, is the story I tell."

From Publishers Weekly
Though it's more a tribute than a biography, this work from Liz Claiborne's husband and longtime business collaborator, Ortenberg, nevertheless provides a compelling behind-the-scenes portrait of the late, beloved fashion designer, focusing attention on the personal side of Claiborne's extraordinary business achievements (like becoming the first female owner of a Fortune 500 company). Born to privilege in 1929 Brussels (her family moved to America at the start of WWII), Claiborne learned responsibility from her parents and developed a powerful sense of ambition, allowing her to navigate the turbulent world of fashion; after decades of work, she would reach her pinnacle of international popularity in the logo-obsessed 1980s. While the first half of Ortenberg's paean makes an able account of the duo's workaday life, the second half is dominated by Claiborne's slow, painful struggle with ovarian cancer, an exhaustive (and exhausting) account of horrors suffered that could discourage all but the most committed readers. Liz Claiborne...a woman with a great smile
By Cheryl Koch
Anyone and everyone in the fashion industry is familiar with Liz Claiborne fashion. Though are you familiar with the woman who created this successful fashion empire? Unless you were one of the few lucky ones who got to work with Liz then you don't really know who Liz is and was.

Liz Claiborne grew up always knowing exactly what she wanted to be...a fashion designer. She had a great fashion sense. In 1976, Liz started Liz Claiborne Inc. Sadly on June 26, 2007, Liz passed way from cancer. Even up to the very end, Liz was still smiling and a fighter.

In Liz Claiborne, the Legend, the Woman, author, business partner and Liz's husband, Art Ortenberg shares with readers just who Liz really was...a nice person, wife and entrepreneur with great smile and warm heart.

This book truly was a celebration of a Liz Claiborne. She was loved by many people The pictures inserted through out this book were a nice bonus. If you are looking to read this book expecting a memoir of Liz Claiborne and how she started out in the business and maybe learn a couple of interesting facts, then this may not be the book for you. Though, if you are wanting to treasure a moment or two about Liz the woman, then you should check this book out. This would make a good collector's item or make a nice gift to that fashionable person in your life.
