Barney Panofsky smokes too many cigars, drinks too much whiskey, and is obsessed with two things: the Montreal Canadiens hockey team and his ex-wife Miriam. An acquaintance from his youthful years in Paris, Terry McIver, is about to publish his autobiography. In its pages he accuses Barney of an assortment of sins, including murder. It's time, Barney decides, to present the world with his own version of events. Barney's Version is his memoir, a rambling, digressive rant, full of revisions and factual errors (corrected in footnotes written by his son) and enough insults for everyone, particularly vegetarians and Quebec separatists.

But Barney does get around to telling his life story, a desperately funny but sad series of bungled relationships. His first wife, an artist and poet, commits suicide and becomes--� la Sylvia Plath--a feminist icon, and Barney is widely reviled for goading her toward death, if not actually murdering her. He marries the second Mrs. Panofsky, whom he calls a "Jewish-Canadian Princess," as an antidote to the first; it turns out to be a horrible mistake. The third, "Miriam, my heart's desire," is quite possibly his soul mate, but Barney botches this one, too. It's painful to watch him ruin everything, and even more painful to bear witness to his deteriorating memory. The mystery at the heart of Barney's story--did he or did he not kill his friend Boogie?--provides enough forward momentum to propel the reader through endless digressions, all three wives, and every one of Barney's nearly heartbreaking episodes of forgetfulness. Barney's Version, winner of Canada's 1997 Giller Prize, is Richler's 10th novel, and a dense, energetic, and ultimately poignant read. --R. Ellis

You have to like a narrator who can ask about libel after being accused "in print, of being a wife-abuser, an intellectual fraud, a purveyor of pap, a drunk with a penchant for violence, and probably a murderer as well" only to have his lawyer answer "Sounds like [the writer] got things just about right." Richler is in top form with this first-person voice of Barney Panovsky, 67-year-old TV producer at Totally Useless Productions, thrice-married (the third being the one that matters, and she's gone; the second, after being found in bed with Barney's best friend, Boogie, is the catalyst for the putative murder), fretting over liver spots and mental slippage. The book is always hilarious, but the humor is sharpened by the psychological accuracy/honesty and the richness of detail; in short, this is one well-written book. There are even footnotes to help out when Barney gets something wrong. Absolutely for all collections, this is what Barney calls his third wife: "a keeper."?Robert E. Brown, Onondaga Cty. something Joseph Heller fans will love...

Barney's Version is really an incredible novel. While it reads like the memoirs of a cranky, elderly Jewish Canadian who seems to hate most everything (except his last wife and their three kids), it also serves as an interesting analysis of life in Montreal over the last fifty years for the English-speaking minority, especially the enclave of its (once harassed) Jewish residents.
While the characterizations of Barney and his friends/family are top notch it is Richler's flair for biting satire and sarcastic wit which leaves the most lasting impression of Barney's Version. Joseph (Catch-22) Heller wrote novels with similar style and humour. Yet Richler's Barney has a more worldly, fran�ais feel about him compared to Heller's Brooklyn-based characters.
Bottom line: Richler presents a character that is larger than life; it's hard to believe Barney doesn't really exist. Strongly recommended.

Few books haunt my memory, but this one shall, it's great!

I have been reviewing books for 25 years and I must admit that I can count on both hands the number of books I would recommend as "must reads."
But "Barney's Version", by Mordecai Richler, is definitely one of them.As a reader the same age as Barney, I laughed and cried over this wonderful character, and will love him till the day I die.
Barney is a 68 year old Jewish gentleman who has been married three times, widowed once, divorced twice, though still in love with "Miriam, my heart's desire." He had a gay (in the old meaning) youth gallivanting around Europe, then settled in America where he somehow gets charged with and tried for murder. I am a mystery buff, these chapters alone rate those five stars.
This novel is Barney's version of the dastardly deeds he has commited throughout his lifetime, and he will keep you laughing and crying and loving through the pages and through the years.
A bonus in the book is the contribution of Barney's son, Michael, who finds it necessary to footnote the book, correcting Barney here and there, as Barney's memory isn't as good as it used to be. He can never remember such important issues as the last two of the seven dwarfs, the name of that thing you drain spaghetti in, which of the big bands played "In the Mood" and who was that gorgeous brunette in Lil Abner? (You don't remember? Read the book!)
Just recalling the book tempts me to re-read it. I strongly advise you to buy a copy; don't borrow one, for you will never be able to bring yourself to part with it. Enjoy!

A rich, engaging read.

This book is an intelligent, tremendously entertaining read. Mr. Richler assumes the reader is well-read, and this is challenging for some (me). Barney deserves everything he gets in life, except perhaps the final cruelty imposed upon him, as it unfolds in relation to Boogie. Still, I finished this last night, and now find myself missing Barney's perverse dissertations. Damn, Damn, Damn . . . I'm off today to buy "St. Urbain's Horseman"!

Had some interesting correlations and anecdotes to make the many mundane facts and details more memorable than they would have otherwise been. The many diagrams and illustrations also served this purpose, and were very detailed and accurate.

About the Author
Sam Schwartz, a.k.a. “Gridlock Sam,” is one of the leading transportation experts in the United States today. He served as New York City’s traffic commissioner and the New York City Department of Transportation’s chief engineer. Schwartz currently runs Sam Schwartz Engineering and is a columnist at the New York Daily News. He has been profiled by the New Yorker, New York Times, and many other national publications. Schwartz lives in New York City. Follow him @GridlockSam.

William Rosen is a former editor and publisher at Macmillan, Simon & Schuster, and The Free Press. A very accessible look at transit history, especially NYC, through the eyes of one of the world's top transportation engineers.

A very accessible, easily-readable account of the past, present, and future of transit throughout the US and the rest of the world. I especially enjoyed the anecdotes surrounding New York City, an area which Schwartz, also known as "Gridlock Sam," has much personal experience as Traffic Commissioner.

The first half of the book is historical: expect to learn about the great engineering marvel and transportation failure of Robert Moses' Cross-Bronx Expressway, the political and economic reasons (as opposed to the oft-cited social reasons) behind the 50s white flight phenomenon, and other fascinating stories concerning the past 100 years of transit development. Schwartz's magic in this section is the "behind the scenes" perspective, prompting the casual reader (such as myself) to think about the issues like a transportation engineer rather than like a consumer.

The second half of the book concerns the future, and does so by describing unique aspects of transit systems and traffic planning in other cities throughout the country, peppered with anecdotes from Schwartz's work as a consultant. Although I found this portion a little weaker than the NYC historical review (though I admit I am a biased reader who purchased the book out of interest in NYC's infrastructure), it was interesting to learn about the transit systems in other cities. The section about self-driving cars was especially insightful, for the same reasons as the historical portion -- it approached the topic from the perspective of a transportation engineer rather than the perspective of a technologist or consumer.

The reasons I didn't rate the book 5 stars were: I found the section on Millenials and the benefits of walking a little bit unnecessarily long, although I understand why Schwartz would include it assuming an older target audience. I also would have appreciated more details, both historical and technical, in some sections, even if those details risk boring or alienating a more casual reader.

If you're looking for a very easy to read introduction to the broad world of transportation and its political, social, and economic state within the country (or specifically NYC), then I highly recommend this book. If you're looking for a detailed introduction to transportation engineering, this might not be the right place to begin, although it might serve as motivational material to dig deeper.

An encouraging book for smart citizens

During our research on traffic and the effects for cities I came across Samuel Schwartzes book Street Smart: The Rise of Cities and the Fall of Cars. I was hesitant at first to purchase the book as I felt it really exceeded my needs – 292 pages - on smart streets only?

The title turned out to be a bit deceptive, as this book is about so much more than street design: It is an explanation of American Culture, and its obsession with roads and cars, and beyond this a deep dive into the movement created by the millennials who - for the first generation of Americans - seem willing to drive less and to share more resources.

Schwartz, one of the leading transportation experts in the US and a constant proponent for intelligent transportation systems, is thrilled by the combination of a change in citizens’ mentality and the smart use of data. In probably the most eye- opening chapter “What makes a smart city?”, Schwartz dives deep into what the potential for cities are. With examples ranging from the obvious European ‘stars smart cities’ like Copenhagen, Zurich and Amsterdam, Schwartz makes us understand, that functioning cities, which do not condemn its resident to sitting behind a steering wheel for hours at a time, are also real possible in the US:
• L.A. has become the most promising mega city to build a smart public transportation system
• Salt Lake City, with its’ Envision Utah initiative has bet on walking and transit solutions back in 1997 and is now being seen as the best large public transportation system in the US
• New initiatives in many smaller US cities like Boston, Austin and San Francisco show the potential for a

Mobility apps ranging from CityMapper, TransitAPP to Google Maps are connecting the dots for cities and citizens alike. And Schwartz puts emphasis on the seemingly unlimited opportunities brought by technologies to make living in urban areas more attractive and healthier.

Reading the book, I came to admire Samuel Schwartz’s amazing - probably excruciating difficult - efforts over the past 40 + years to change the way Americans (and New York mayors) think about transportation as centered solely around the car and its every growing need for more and bigger streets. He made me lough when he talks about his ‘many acts of municipal sabotage’ erasing an existing road that cut through a New York park from a map. And I was astonished to learn that he had the first bike lanes of New York build in the early '80s (on 5th Avenue) and that Mayor Ed Koch ultimately ordered that they be taken away.

The book left me encouraged to continue to help find solutions to eliminate traffic. Even in a city like New York, arguably the most walkable U.S. city with an amazing public transportation system, the unbelievable number of 300,000 school children is being driven to school there are small ways every citizen can help to make a difference.

A Good Way to Master Music Theory

It is nearly impossible to find a good music theory workbook for younger students but after years of searching, I finally found the Master Theory series for students from preteens to adults. This series is a 6 book anthology with 30 lessons in each book, covering all the essential elements from beginning theory to advanced harmony and arranging. It is ideal for music teachers or for general music classes. The only drawback is that answers are not provided for quizzes and exercises so I cannot recommend it for individual study.

Useful Overview---But that is it

I bought this book as a review book over Christmas. While it is useful in outlining the advantages and disadvantages of each method there are few examples. This book will be useful for your second shelf but did not earn a place in the top shelf. "Quality Improvement Tools and Techniques" by Mears fills that spot. However, Mears' book does not cover RCA in any detail at all so this book still earns a place in the second shelf. A much better book for RCA would be Smith's "Reliability, Maintainability and Risk: Practical Methods for Engineers." He provides more examples, which are the best way for engineers to learn. I do not keep it in the top shelf because it is too detailed. If you want an overview, Wilson's book may be useful; when you get confused, go to Smith.
