About the Author
International Master Valentin Bogdanov has over thirty years' experience as a chess trainer, and is from Ukraine. His pupils include Moskalenko, Savchenko and Drozdovsky, and he has acted as a second for the well-known grandmaster and theoretician Viacheslav Eingorn since the late 1970s. This is his third book for Gambit.

Chess Explained: The Alekhine

This book should have been called Chess Explained: The Alekhine. It is identical in style, size and purpose. If you are familiar with that series of books then you will know what to expect. The only real difference is that this book gives pretty complete coverage of the opening rather than a selective survey, albeit with very few games per line. The annotations are also a bit more accessible and target a lower ranked audience than the typical Chess Explained too.
The verbal annotations are very extensive and very helpful. This book took a bit of a beating recently on a popular openings forum, but I think the problem was that the commenters were already experienced with the Alekhine and probably 2100+, and this book appeared not to add too much to previous offerings. If you are a lower ranked player though, or new to the opening, this is a gold mine. John Cox's book is still a great place to start (surprise, surprise), but this is equally good IMO.
You get 26 deeply annotated games which include all popular anti-Alekhines (reasonably deferring the Vienna/Four Knights though) and all of the major lines. The theory is pretty current with most games of the 2008 vintage. Bogdanov offers his opinion on the nature of the resulting games and advice as to which lines to choose for different player styles.
Judging from the forum comments this is probably best consumed by the sub-master, and I would say it is accessible quite far down the food chain. The author seems to be candid about the viability of each line and the game selection gives Black 44%.

Great overview but not enough lines/analysis

This book is a great overview of the Alekhine Defence. If you like books with illustrative games then this book is definitely for you. It covers all the main lines and gives a little analysis of alternative moves to those played in the games. I however prefer books with comprehensive analysis that cover many lines. I am still happy that I own this book because it covers modern developments but you will need to compliment it with the older classic "The Complete Alekhine".

good book

An easy read which has much to offer the advance player. Cannot recommend this book for the beginner but anyone would benefit from the study of this material.
