I'm not going to resell it

When I bought this book for my UOP HUM/205 course I had every intention of selling it at the end of the course. However after making an A+ in the class, I have decided to place the book on my shelf. It is just full of beautiful artwork, and endless information. I was not however so impressed with the Islamic section of the book. There were 2 pictures that I felt to be controversial which were poor examples. However all in all this is a gorgeous book. Wish it were hardcover, because it looks like I used it! Great book! Great course! Enjoy!

The prices for this textbook are very high through these listed sellers. If you are purchasing this book for a University of Phoenix class please know that they offer it new for under 100.00.

school book full of black mold

The price of $76 was outrageous for a book that was listed as having a'little water damage'. The book has a lot of water damage and is filled with page after page of black mold. My daughter needed it for a class the day it arrived and she became ill with upper respiratory congestion and headache two days after opening the package. There was no time to return it and get a new book. This is not a reflection on Amazon but on the book seller.

A Masterpiece

I don't know where to start. I've read "The Godfather" perhaps five times, yet it has taken me decades to pick up "The Fortunate Pilgrim." And what was the result? One of the most beautiful and quietly thrilling reading experiences I've ever had. I've always thought Puzo was an underrated writer, and bristled when he was casually insulted or referred to as a writer of pulp. "The Godfather" is in fact a great novel. But this gem, "The Fortunate Pilgrim" surpassed all my expectations. The writing is very simply poetic and masterly throughout. The style is gorgeously cinematic and seems to reflect the powerful vision of a boy growing up in Hell's Kitchen in New York who truly saw beauty all around him and who let it flood his heart. As I read this book, his vision of that beauty flooded mine. As for the character exploration, it is very simply magnificent. So deep does this novel go into the psyche of the women of this early twentieth century Italian immigrant family that it is nearly impossible to believe that a man wrote this, that he could open his mind and soul so totally to what these female characters suffered and saw and learned and knew. The male characters are no less exquisitely realized. And the world these people inhabited, with their disappointments, losses, hopes and dreams is here captured forever in these pages with exquisite and perfect skill. Over and over I underlined passages and phrases. Over and over I scribbled vocabulary in the back of the book. Such an achievement. --------- I have few regrets about my life but I will always regret that I never met Mario Puzo, that I never encountered him just for a few minutes at a bookstore so that I could tell him what "The Godfather" meant to me as a young writer. And now I miss the guy with all my heart. --- And I miss his generation and all that they witnessed and knew. How grateful I am that he gave us this small, perfect story, so carefully and lovingly crafted for all time.

Excellent Book!

Mario Puzo took the everyday life of an ordinary Italian immigrant family and turned it into a masterpiece! A treat for the reader. By the end of the book I felt like I know this family personally. His character depth is amazing. After reading this book I have a much better understanding of what my own grandparents went through when they came over from Italy. Living in today's world filled with conveniences, we tend to forget the struggles of the generations before us. I recommend this book to readers of all ages.

His Mother Took Over

Mario Puzo feels that this novel, written before THE GODFATHER or any of his more popular novels, is superior to them all. In a creative sense, THE FORTUNATE PILGRIM is the parent, and the rest of his books are the offspring.
In the hands of someone like Puzo, the creative process is a wonderful thing to observe. He relates how he set out to write a novel in which he was the hero and the rest of his family were villains who wanted to stifle his writing career; and how, stalwart young man that he was, he succeeded in spite of them and the stumbling blocks they placed in his path. He was unable to write this version of his life, not even as fiction. Truth and the memory of the strength of the woman who reared him wouldn't allow him to deny the impact she had on his life.
Puzo wrote, but not what he had planned, or even what he thought he was writing. At some point he realized that the book wasn't about himself. It was about his mother. THE FORTUNATE PILGRIM's Lucia Santa is the personification of Puzo's mother and this book is her book as surely as if she'd written it herself.
When we read about Lucia Santa's life in Hell's Kitchen, a single mother as we would call her today, as she raises six children, we are constantly amazed at her strength.
Her oldest son becomes a Mafia Union Organizer (read strong arm man and collector of "protection" money) against her will. But Lucia Santa prevails.
Her daughter spends six months in a sanitorium for her lungs and comes home too assimilated for Lucia Santa's taste. But Lucia Santa prevails.
One of her sons commits suicide. But Lucia Santa prevails.
One tragedy follows on the heels of another. But Lucia Santa prevails.
After the death of her son, her neighbors bewail her misfortunes, "First husband dead; second destroyed for life; a grown son, already a breadwinner, struck down. What tragedy, what misfortune!" But how does Lucia Santa look at it? A grown daughter, a forelady with a hard working sober husband. One son who has given her grandchildren and is making a good living. Another son working on the railroad and no longer giving her troubles. Yet another son winning awards in school. Yes, Lucia Santa prevails.
Lucia Santa is, in every way, Puzo's mother. Is it any wonder that she dominates this novel? The choice as to who was the hero (or heroine) was never really Puzo's to make. It's a better novel and a more honest one the way it wrote itself (with a little assist from Puzo).
Puzo says that, not only is this her novel, but so is THE GODFATHER. From his mother's mouth to Puzo's ears, to the written page, we have Lucia Santa to thank for these books. Oh, by the way, Mario, thanks for channeling them for us, the readers.

Okay at Best

This was a decent short story, which introduces readers to Juliet E. McKenna's The Hadrumal Crisis fantasy series. The Wizard's Coming might actually be a true prequel to that series, but since I've not read it, I'm not sure. The focus of the tale, however, is on Lord Halferan, who has contacted a wizard from the wizard isle to come to his small realm's aid against the corsairs from the sea.

McKenna starts things off by introducing a reader to a group of warriors waiting by the sea for sign of the approach of ships, and then their desperate flight back to their lord to give him word of the arrival of said ships. From there, the viewpoint shifts to Lord Halferan himself as he attempts to save his people from the corsairs only to find himself confronted by a danger he should have been expecting but blinded himself to.

Whenever I read a short story or novella that is an "introduction" to a fantasy series, I always worry that the author is not going to be able to pull it off: i.e. make me want to read their series. Honestly, it is difficult to write a gripping intro story that sets up a trilogy. It can be done, but it is difficult. And usually, the writers who fail make one of two glaring mistakes: either they do not give me enough details about the world to make it interesting, or they info dump me to death in order to let me know how great their fantasy setting is. Unfortunately, McKenna makes the former mistake.

In The Wizard's Coming, a reader is thrown into the action from the beginning with little understanding of what is going on. Even when Lord Halferan makes an appearance to begin clearing up the confusion, the story rapidly speeds up, hurtling toward completion with the reader still scratching his or her head as to why any of this is occurring. When you add to this the minute world building, you could probably understand my reservations about this story.

Now, is The Wizard's Coming a horrible read?

Not at all. It is entertaining. Unfortunately, it did not excite me or make me desire to try out the fantasy series, which is disappointing. So keep this in mind if you try this one out.

The characters in this book drive a convoluted and unique plot that revolves around the consequences of some people having magic and immense power while others don't. The characters are entirely believable and the conflict between them carries the reader past the occasional slow spot.

I think there are much better action/wizard/adventure books and stories out there. This is a short read and leaves the reader frustrated to understand more of what is going on. it's ok.

In the 1960’s Christians across America were singing the song “In Times like These You Need the Savior” written by Ruth Caye Jones. Now, sixty years later in their book “The Forgotten Mountain – The Place of Peace in a Time of Confusion” Don Nori Sr. and Ambassador Clyde Rivers are offering hope to another generation on a quest for peace in a time of confusion.

By the end of chapter one I knew I was on the edge of a threshold, transcending man’s earthly contemporized perception, moving into the pronunciation of the wisdom of the ancients, those Old Testament prophets, who received their “wisdom from above,” who spoke of current events as far back as ancient Egypt, and of things to come in the last times. I knew I was moving into the realm of new vistas of prophetic insight and understanding into the truth of Scriptures often overlooked, that change the heart.

Much of the inspiration for the material, within the chapters, of this book come from the writings in the “Classic Wisdom on the Kingdom” by Dr. Myles Monroe,” included in the closing pages of this book. Another important feature is the “Glossary of Terms That Change the Conversation.”
