This author should be getting paid by the firms who hire users of this book. The reader will indeed hit the ground running on day one as an consultant.

Before you even begin to read - the author offers bonus tools that will assist the reader with achieving their objectives. Additionally, current informative feedback from former readers of the book are inspirational for the consultant job hunter.

This book is a great tool for anyone who wants to get over the hurdles. It is alarming how many minutes it takes to actually knock yourself out of a job opportunity. The author states that " the interview is essentially over even before it has begun"; this reveals how critical it is to answer case questions.

Excellent resource, but not complete with free practice problems

There are a number of resources out there that can be used to prepare for a case interview. I am very glad I chose this one. Victor Cheng does a great job making the case interview relatable and manageable by teaching how to think like a consultant. The book is fairly light and easy-to-read, but packed with good information. To provide an example, I went to a case interview workshop yesterday with a large consulting firm, and I felt well-versed in the principles that they taught after reading just half of Case Interview Secrets.

I do wish there were more practice materials that were included with the book or free supplementary materials. Victor's website and emails are great- he does an incredible job maintaining his website and provide daily updates that are useful to read. So sign up for his website and use the materials. Nevertheless, It does seem like part of its purpose is to get you to buy his many programs, which, to be fair, seem extremely thorough and well made. I just do not have the funding to spend $100 on a (seemingly very high-quality) resume builder aid.

In short, buy the book, use the book, and you will feel much more confident about your upcoming case interview.

Recommended first read for consulting interview preparation

I started my case practice with other case materials and books, but I always ended up getting "good but not there yet" feedback. After going through this book, the biggest advantage I got was understanding what every piece of case interview means. Why am I supposed to develop an hypothesis early? Why I need to be structured? Why unnecessary delving costs money or "job" in my scenario? and What it means to be a consultant? It really helped me to radically change my approach for case interviews. Instead of mindlessly doing tons of cases, I started spending more time on reviewing the case I did against the benchmark I developed after reading this book. Voila!! I "understood" what they look for in the interviews. Having a good business intuition and problem solving is one thing, but for a career switcher like me, understanding how to channel and highlight that talent in consulting world is a different beast altogether. If you are just like me then this is the first book you should start with if you decide to pursue consulting as a career. Mind you, this book doesn't have cases for you to practice, but it will provide you a good foundation to think in the right direction to approach a case.

Some Good Information, but Marginal Presentation

This book is in need of at least one more round of serious editing to clean up the text and remove the repetitive passages, particularly the descriptions of disaster events. Some sections are so badly worded that at times it seems the author's notes were transcribed verbatim without regard to structure, format or punctuation. That said, there is some good information here and the author's years of experience in the field provide for some useful analysis. Overall, a decent supplement to a BC/DR reference library, but not a "must have" by any means.

About the Author

Ron Larson received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Colorado in 1970. At that time he accepted a position with Penn State University, and he currently holds the rank of professor of mathematics at the university. Larson is the lead author of more than two dozen mathematics textbooks that range from sixth grade through calculus levels. Many of his texts, such as the tenth edition of his calculus text, are leaders in their markets. Larson is also one of the pioneers in the use of multimedia and the Internet to enhance the learning of mathematics. He has authored multimedia programs, extending from the elementary school through calculus levels. Larson is a member of several professional groups and is a frequent speaker at national and regional mathematics meetings.

 

Betsy Farber received her Bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Penn State University and her Master’s degree in mathematics from the College of New Jersey. Since 1976, she has been teaching all levels of mathematics at Bucks County Community College in Newtown, Pennsylvania, where she currently holds the rank of professor. She is particularly interested in developing new ways to make statistics relevant and interesting to her students and has been teaching statistics in many different modes—with the TI-84 Plus, with MINITAB, and by distance learning as well as in the traditional classroom. A member of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC), she is an author of The Student Edition of MINITAB and A Guide to MINITAB. She served as consulting editor for Statistics: A First Course and has written computer tutorials for the CD-ROM correlating to the texts in the Street Series in mathematics.

Good book, code don't work for MyLabPlus

As exactly as pictured. The book is exactly like my last statistic book so it's a good book. The code works but I can't use it, so if you are using MyLabPlus do NOT purchase because the code will not work for you. Which is funny, when you try to buy the code online at MyLabPlus they are selling you the MyStatLab code O.o. Now I have to go spend MORE money for a code. The reason I gave it one star is because it's exactly like my last statistics book from last year that is now being sold for $15 so I don't see the point of a new one.

The book is good it is the one I needed

The book is good it is the one I needed. The issue however is the access code. The description is very misleading and leads you to believe there will be a working access code that comes with it. However this is not the case. The access code had already been used and I had to buy the access code for another $100 because that's where the course homework is located.

The Luciferic Initiation

This is the 2012 edition of David Spangler's classic "Reflections on the Christ", first published in 1978. The book contains speeches given by Spangler already in 1970-71 at Findhorn, a New Age community in Scotland. Spangler has edited one of his more controversial speeches, "Lucifer, Christ and God" and appended a new article, "A Retrospective on Lucifer, Christ and God". An article called "A letter to the Findhorn Community" has been dropped. Otherwise, it's pretty much the same book as back in 1978.

According to Wiki, Spangler's ideas are inspired by those of Alice Bailey. I never read Bailey (correction: I *tried* to read Bailey - so have you, and we're still not any wiser), but I have read Steiner and Barfield. The similarities between Dave and the Anthroposophists are striking, and I've jokingly called Spangler's message "Anthroposophy with a human face".

According to Spangler, humanity hasn't fallen into matter from a higher and loftier estate we should all aspire to re-enter. Rather, we are supposed to be here. Humans are expressions of Spirit attempting to come to grips with dense matter. We are on an evolutionary journey which takes us down, deeper and deeper into the material world. We are supposed to evolve stable egos and self-conscious personalities. Only in a later stage of evolution do we start moving upwards again, somehow both transcending and incorporating matter (this part of Spangler's message is somewhat unclear). However, our spiritual evolution has gone dangerously wrong, since most of us have forgotten our mission and identify with matter so completely that we no longer believe in the spirit-world. Both the Buddha and Christ came to remedy this situation. Christ was a spirit-entity who overshadowed the human Jesus. When Jesus was crucified, his energy patterns somehow merged with those of the planet Earth (which is a kind of living organism), making it possible for humanity to attain wholeness again and continue its journey. I don't know what Bailey said about these things, but this sure sounds like vintage Steiner.

According to Spangler, the Christ is really a kind of cosmic energy or life force. He is the power behind our spiritual evolution. Lucifer plays a similar role. In Spangler's (controversial) vision, Lucifer isn't entirely evil, but rather a being which challenges man and prods him forward on his evolutionary quest, often by confronting him with his errors, deepest fears and anxieties. At one point, Spangler relates Lucifer to the Jungian Shadow, which must be incorporated rather than suppressed to make humans whole. "Satan" is simply the negative side of Lucifer, which becomes powerful when humans fail to confront their shadows. Satan feeds on the negative or "evil" energy patterns which are really the creations of human beings.

Spangler has often been fingered as the "founder" (sic) of the New Age movement. There is indeed much in this book which any new agey baby boomer can relate too: the Cosmic Christ, the Age of Aquarius, spiritual evolution, a positive view of matter, "evil" simply being misused energy or energy out of place, the idea that suffering is a learning experience, etc. Other ideas sound more occult, such as the talk about Atlantis and Lemuria, or Spangler's belief in the Kumaras, including Sanat Kumara. He is the "higher self" of the Earth, the planet's great "initiator" and somehow its real king and ruler. The "initiation" is a kind of fast-track evolution, in which millions of years of slow and steadfast growth are crammed into a few centuries. It's not entirely clear to me what Sanat Kumara will do, except that he will evolve humanity onto a new level. The whole idea sounds like a New Age version of postmillennialism. At one point, Spangler calls the Findhorn community "the Second Coming"!

The 1978 edition of "Reflections on the Christ" contained the rather unfortunate statement: "Maybe to enter the New Age, we all need to take a Luciferic Initiation". This quote (sometimes in suitably enhanced versions) has been used for good effect by both Christian fundamentalists and anti-New World Order conspiracy theorists. Poor Dave has been cast in the role of the Anti-Christ or worse. Some conspiracy websites claim that he is employed by the United Nations! Imagine that. As already noted, Spangler has responded to the furor by simply expunging all references to the Luciferic Initiation from the 2012 edition. I'm not sure if that helps. Search for "David Spangler Luciferic Initiation" on the web and see what happens...

In contrast to "Subtle Worlds" (reviewed by me elsewhere), this book sounds more dogmatically esoteric. I mean, Lemuria? Sanat Kumara? Please. Still, "Reflections on the Christ" could be of interest to those interested in the more hidden history of the New Age, far away from Carlos Castaneda, Shirley MacLaine or the crystal craze. For that reason, I give it four stars.

David Spangler (born 1945) is an American spiritual philosopher, channel, and self-described "practical mystic," who founded the education program at Findhorn in northern Scotland. He has written many books that were highly influential within the New Age movement, such as Revelation: The Birth of a New Age, The Call, A Pilgrim in Aquarius, The Laws of Manifestation: A Consciousness Classic, etc.

Here are some quotations from this 1978 book:

"The Christ represents the supreme educative force in creation." (Pg. 3)
"The true birth of the Christ was not the birth of Jesus. Jesus was an individual who himself had to recapitulate certain stages. He built upon the pattern the Buddha had established... he himself had to become awakened. He had to in his consciousness touch this Christ pattern." (Pg. 6)
"Christ is a consciousness, an attitude, an orientation towards oneself and one's universe; he is not a dogma, a set of laws of a teaching." (Pg. 30)
"The New Age is not a teaching but an action of revelation drawing upon the same seed source as does the Church, and this same revelation is stirring within the churches as new thought and direction and awareness are born." (Pg. 31)
"It is important to see that Lucifer, as I am using this term, describes an angel, a being, a great and mighty planetary consciousness. It does not describe that thought-form of Satan who seeks to lead man down the path of sin and wrongdoing. This is a human creation... Man is his own Satan just as man is his own salvation." (Pg. 38-39)

There are so many good reviews here, so I won't repeat the kudos except to say that I bought the book for us at Christmas and lent it to my 90-year-old Italian mother-in-law and she won't give it back. She makes something from it almost every week. I've made the eggplant-cherrytomato curry and followed it to the letter (except for the tsp of sugar!) and it is fantastic--you don't have to precook the eggplant as you do with so many recipes, but be sure to cut it thin, as Meera says. And the curried cauliflower is incredibly delicious, you could eat a panful. Again, do blanch the cauliflower ahead of time. I used the lesser amount of salt and found that to be plenty of salt, btw. I roast cauliflower all the time, but this is the best. Sometimes I cheat and use ground spices instead of grinding the whole ones, but that only means the next time I cook cauliflower I'll do the grinding and it will taste even better. Also make her mama's curried chicken--delicious. Once I get the cookbook back, I'll make more recipes. Actually, I think I'll buy another copy and let her keep it.

The recipes are not only easy and, on the whole

This is exactly what I was hoping for in an Indian cookbook. The recipes are not only easy and, on the whole, healthy, but they all sound wonderful as well. I've made a few already and they're spot on. It's nice to have recipes for things besides chicken tikka masala, korma, etc.

Terrific: good recipes and pleasant to read

Really like this book: the writing is very engaging, the recipes are well explained and we've liked the few we've tried so far. Part of the charm is that the author lives in my native England, and I like those English references. There shouldn't be difficulties for American readers, but you may want to bear in mind that when Ms Sodha refers to 'chili powder', the Mexican chili powder in your cupboard is probably not what she's referring to, as it contains more than powdered chilis. Also, Americans may be puzzled as to why the index contains the entry 'eggplants' under 'A': the reason is clearly that in England these are called 'aubergines', so 'A' was the right place for this until the American editor changed the word without moving the entry! The only other comment I'd add is that canola oil is the go-to oil in this recipe book (as it is in other excellent Indian cookbooks), but I actually don't favour canola oil, since it's highly processed (look up how it's made) and is not the health oil the authors seem to imagine. To the contrary, a better oil is avocado: very healthy and natural, with neutral flavour and a high smoking point. Olive oil has also worked just fine for me as a substitute when avocado oil wasn't available.

Update: Have just tried a potato recipe ('Ferrari') which calls for a lidded pan and then doesn't tell you what to do with the lid (if anything). The baffling point, though, was the 'ounce' of cilantro to be added at the end to the cooked seasoned potatoes. An ounce is an awful lot of cilantro, even for those that really like its pungent flavour: it fills my 2-cup pyrex storage bowl. I don't imagine that the author wants you to sprinkle all THAT on less than 1 pound of potatoes. But British cookbook authors often use grams (and metric generally) rather than American measures. Perhaps it was not '1 ounce' in the original English edition. Similarly, the peanuts asked for, while not a lot, are certainly a good deal more than anyone would want for a batch of this size. So sometimes the specific quantities might need to be taken with 'a pinch of salt'.

Overall, I love the recipes and the ingredients discussions, as well as all the lovely pictures. This book is a great addition to anyone's cookbook library!
