Ray O’Ryan has loved space stories ever since he watched the very first episode of Star Trek. He loves to imagine what traveling across the galaxy might be like and is a bit jealous of Galaxy Zack in this regard. Ray lives in the beautiful Catskill Mountains in upstate New York with his wife and two lovable, zany cats named Stitch and The Way.

Colin Jack is originally from Vancouver, Canada, and has illustrated several children’s books. He currently works at DreamWorks Animation as a story artist and character designer and lives in the Bay Area with his wife and two sons.

I bought these books for my 6yr old son. He now has the whole series. They are a great read. Content is spot on for a 6 to 8 yr old depending on their reading level. Only problem is he reads each book in about 2 hrs.

Too much history, not enough Dr. Martens ...

I am a huge fan of Dr. Martens, the made in England kind, not much experience wih the made in China manufacturing. I thought this book was going to explain how the shoes are made, why they last so long, etc. It isn't exactly what I got.

The book mainly focuses on pop culture from the 60's till today, especially in the realm of music and what bands wear what. If I wanted a book on Brit pop and pop culture in general I could have bought that.

The book DOES have some nice pictures to leaf through. The book also makes no mention of movIng the majority of their manufacturing to other countries. This may be because the book was published in 2003 when they began to make most of their shoes in China and the like or because the author wanted to avoid the topic altogether. You can draw your own conclusions.

Not a bad read if you pick it up cheap, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get it.

Do you want to make more money? Then read this book.

This book exceeded my expectations but more importantly I have already seen an improvement in my business growth. The ideas/concepts that Mr. Sturgeon shares are edgy and creative. I wanted to get out of a rut and this book did it! Thank you for sharing how benchmarking/metrics pushed you to the top. I plan on reading this one every year to keep me on point.

Love the TV series, HATE the book

I remember "reading" this book a few years ago before the TV series came out. I say "reading" because, while I do not remember the MAIN reason I threw this book to the trash, I do remember it was boring and poorly written. As an engineer there were far too many problems with the logistics of the author's premise. I am watching the TV series and I LOVE IT. It is what the book SHOULD have been. I actually look forward to every Sunday and hate when the show ends after the hour. I have purchased the Season 1 and 2 DVD's to view again. In my opinion, the TV series is 5 stars, while the book is only 1. I did not believe it when I was told the TV series was based on this book. If that were true I would have thrown something at my television. SEE THE SERIES, forget the book. Two completely different premises and experiences.

I can't recommend enough against purchasing this book. Just don't do it, it's not worth it.

Listen up folks. I read 2-3 books/week. I devour hundreds of pages a day. The number of books I couldn't bring myself to finish in the past 30 years, I can count on two hands. This book is unfortunately one of them.

I don't know where this author learned conventions, but the sheer number of commas proved comical enough that it actually brought me to tears. While the plot is interesting, the writing is horrific, and I've seen better character development in Penthouse Forum. I only managed to get through the first two chapters, which is a new low for me.

I can't recommend enough against purchasing this book. Just don't do it, it's not worth it.

A good story, a litery slog

First, beyond the names of a few of the characters (and the ship) this book has nothing to do with the TV show. Just so you know. If you are looking for an illumination of the show, look elsewhere.

An interesting story, nothing to do with the TV show, but literary slog. You should download the Kindle sample before you decide the prose is worth the effort.

As this book was written nearly 20 years ago, lots of reviews have been written, so feel free to look them up. Most make similar points. Then you can decide if you want to invest in reading this book (625 pages and 14 hours, according to Kindle).

The most common point is that there is a good story here, but it can be a labor getting through the author's convoluted prose. His complex inverted sentence structure can induce skimming for actual dialog, for which you might go several pages (see what I mean about inverted?) and he writes as if he held a thesaurus in his lap. I've no way of knowing, as he is now dead. He may have actually had such a working vocabulary. But I doubt it, given he occasionally conflates "further" with "farther" and the like.

I get the impression he is attempting to be "literary", but he comes off as a poor attempt to emulate Arthur Conan Doyle.

Another point is an implicit misogyny. The Navy had then just allowed female midshipmen (itself, a nomenclature irony) and in the imagined (at the time) allowance of presence shipboard. So, in this futuristic setting the interaction of on-board female and male personnel is imagined. For this, he can be forgiven as it is speculative from 1988 to some only imagined future date.

So summary: An interesting story, nothing to do with the TV show, a literary slog. I found it worth the effort for the story, but I am a fast reader, so the slog wasn't to onerous.

Easy to read with great stories, really helps

I read the manuscript when I was moving from UK to France. It is a great book. Not only has the practical things like documents list, clothes to pack, etc it also explains the emotional side you are going to face like homesick, cultural shock and loneliness and how to over come it. Rafael really did a good job writing it. I recommend to anyone moving countries. No matter which country you are going it really helps you in every stage of your move.
